Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Estate Planning

Abstract

Agricultural estate planning is an important aspect of farm management and intergenerational agricultural resource management because it helps farmers plan the future ownership, management, transfer, and use of farm assets. Effective estate planning can support continuity of farming activities, reduce uncertainty over the transfer of agricultural land and other farm assets, and minimize potential disagreements among family members. Extension training can provide farmers with useful knowledge about planning for the orderly management and transfer of agricultural resources. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ knowledge of agricultural estate planning. The study will assess farmers’ knowledge of estate planning before and after exposure to extension training and determine the extent to which training improves their understanding of farm asset planning and succession arrangements. It will also identify areas of agricultural estate planning in which farmers require additional information and advisory support. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of farm asset identification, agricultural land documentation, succession planning, transfer of farm assets, inheritance arrangements, farm business continuity, identification of potential successors, record keeping, and planning for the future management of agricultural enterprises. It will also consider farmers’ exposure to extension training through workshops, group meetings, farm visits, demonstrations, and other advisory activities related to farm succession and estate planning. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their knowledge of agricultural estate planning and exposure to extension training. The collected data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analyses will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ knowledge of agricultural estate planning. The study is expected to reveal differences in farmers’ knowledge of agricultural estate planning following exposure to extension training. Farmers who participate in relevant training programmes may demonstrate improved understanding of farm asset documentation, succession arrangements, transfer planning, and continuity of farm operations. The study may also identify knowledge gaps relating to estate planning procedures, inadequate records, limited access to advisory services, and traditional approaches to farm asset transfer. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, farmers’ associations, agricultural development agencies, land administration authorities, policymakers, researchers, and organisations involved in rural development and agricultural resource management. The findings may provide useful information for developing extension programmes that improve farmers’ understanding of estate planning and promote better preparation for the future management and transfer of agricultural assets. The study concludes that extension training can contribute to improving farmers’ knowledge of agricultural estate planning and support better management and continuity of farm assets. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies incorporate estate planning education into relevant farmer training programmes through practical workshops, farm visits, educational materials, and advisory services. Farmers should also be encouraged to maintain accurate farm records, document their assets, and seek appropriate professional guidance when making plans for the future transfer and management of agricultural resources.
