Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Water Management Practices
Abstract
Water management is an important aspect of agricultural production because the availability and efficient use of water can influence crop growth, farm productivity, and the sustainability of agricultural activities. Appropriate water management practices can help farmers reduce water losses, maintain suitable soil moisture, improve irrigation efficiency, and conserve available water resources. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and technical skills needed to understand and apply appropriate water management practices. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of water management practices. It will assess how participation in extension training programmes influences farmers’ knowledge, skills, and application of recommended water management techniques. The study will also examine the extent to which training activities such as demonstrations, workshops, field-based instruction, and advisory sessions contribute to farmers’ adoption of efficient water management practices. The study will focus on irrigation scheduling, efficient water application, water conservation, soil moisture management, drainage management, rainwater harvesting, water storage, and the use of water-saving technologies. It will also assess farmers’ exposure to extension training, frequency of participation, practical involvement, and understanding of recommended water management techniques. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate adoption assessment instruments. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of water management practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of appropriate water management practices. Farmers who participate regularly in practical training, demonstrations, and advisory sessions may demonstrate greater use of efficient irrigation methods, water conservation techniques, appropriate watering schedules, and soil moisture management practices. The findings may also identify specific water management practices where farmers require additional training and technical support. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, irrigation authorities, government agricultural agencies, water-resource management institutions, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for designing effective extension training programmes, improving farmers’ technical skills, promoting water conservation, and strengthening sustainable agricultural water management. The study concludes that extension training can contribute to farmers’ adoption of efficient water management practices by providing relevant knowledge, practical skills, and technical guidance. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension organisations strengthen practical demonstrations, field training, workshops, and regular advisory support on irrigation management, water conservation, efficient water application, and other appropriate water management techniques.
