Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Storage Humidity Monitoring Practices

Abstract

The study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of storage humidity monitoring practices. Monitoring humidity within agricultural storage facilities is important for maintaining suitable storage conditions and protecting stored produce from moisture-related deterioration, mould growth, spoilage, and quality loss. Proper humidity monitoring can enable farmers to detect unfavorable storage conditions early and take appropriate measures to preserve the quality of stored agricultural products. The study will focus on the extent to which farmers adopt storage humidity monitoring practices following extension training. Specific areas will include understanding the importance of humidity in produce storage, using suitable humidity monitoring devices, taking regular humidity readings, recording monitoring results, identifying unfavorable humidity conditions, improving ventilation when necessary, and taking appropriate corrective measures. Extension training is expected to provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills for monitoring and managing humidity conditions within storage facilities. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension training, knowledge of storage humidity monitoring, and adoption of relevant monitoring practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal that extension training contributes to farmers’ adoption of storage humidity monitoring practices. The findings may indicate improvements in farmers’ ability to use humidity monitoring devices, conduct regular measurements, maintain monitoring records, recognize unfavorable humidity conditions, and apply appropriate storage management measures. The study may also identify challenges that limit farmers’ consistent monitoring of humidity in storage facilities. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, storage facility operators, and policymakers by providing information on the role of extension training in improving environmental monitoring within agricultural storage facilities. The findings may assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that strengthen farmers’ knowledge and skills in managing storage conditions and reducing moisture-related post-harvest losses. The study will conclude that effective extension training can enhance farmers’ knowledge and adoption of storage humidity monitoring practices. It will recommend that agricultural extension officers provide practical demonstrations, training sessions, advisory visits, and follow-up support on the use of humidity monitoring devices, recording of readings, interpretation of storage conditions, ventilation management, and other appropriate measures for maintaining suitable storage environments.
