Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Produce Transportation Preparation Practices

Abstract

The study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of produce transportation preparation practices. Proper preparation of agricultural produce before transportation is important for maintaining product quality, reducing physical damage, minimizing post-harvest losses, and ensuring that produce reaches its destination in suitable condition. Appropriate preparation can also improve the efficiency of loading, handling, and transportation operations. The study will focus on the extent to which farmers adopt produce transportation preparation practices following extension training. Specific areas will include sorting and grading of produce, appropriate packaging, selection of suitable containers, preparation of protective materials, proper arrangement of produce, checking packaging condition, labelling, preparation of loading areas, and inspection of produce before transportation. Extension training is expected to provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills for preparing agricultural produce appropriately before movement from the farm to markets or other destinations. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension training, knowledge of transportation preparation, and adoption of relevant practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal that extension training contributes to farmers’ adoption of appropriate produce transportation preparation practices. The findings may indicate improvements in produce sorting, grading, packaging, container selection, protective handling, arrangement, labelling, and inspection before transportation. The study may also identify challenges that affect farmers’ ability to consistently prepare produce adequately for transportation. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, produce marketers, transport operators, and policymakers by providing information on the role of extension training in improving transportation preparation practices. The findings may assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that strengthen farmers’ post-harvest handling skills and reduce losses associated with inadequate preparation of agricultural produce for transportation. The study will conclude that effective extension training can enhance farmers’ knowledge and adoption of produce transportation preparation practices. It will recommend that agricultural extension officers provide practical demonstrations, training sessions, farm visits, and follow-up advisory services on proper sorting, grading, packaging, container selection, protective handling, loading preparation, and produce inspection before transportation.
