Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Produce Storage Arrangement Practices

Abstract

The study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of produce storage arrangement practices. Proper arrangement of agricultural produce in storage facilities is important for maintaining product quality, facilitating inspection, improving air circulation, and reducing physical damage and post-harvest losses. Appropriate storage arrangement can also make it easier for farmers to organize stored produce, monitor stock, and access products when needed. The study will focus on the extent to which farmers adopt appropriate produce storage arrangement practices following extension training. Specific areas will include organizing produce according to type and condition, maintaining adequate spacing between stacks, arranging products on suitable platforms, avoiding direct contact with floors and walls, maintaining appropriate stack heights, providing access pathways, separating damaged produce, and arranging products to facilitate inspection and handling. Extension training is expected to provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills for organizing stored produce effectively. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension training, knowledge of produce storage arrangement, and adoption of relevant practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal that extension training contributes to farmers’ adoption of appropriate produce storage arrangement practices. The findings may indicate improvements in produce organization, spacing, stack height management, use of suitable platforms, separation of damaged produce, provision of access pathways, and arrangement for easier inspection. The study may also identify challenges that limit farmers’ consistent application of recommended storage arrangement practices. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, storage facility operators, and policymakers by providing information on the contribution of extension training to improved storage management. The findings may assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that strengthen farmers’ skills in organizing stored produce and maintaining suitable storage conditions. The study will conclude that effective extension training can enhance farmers’ knowledge and adoption of produce storage arrangement practices. It will recommend that agricultural extension officers provide practical demonstrations, storage facility visits, training sessions, and follow-up advisory services on proper stacking, spacing, platform use, access pathways, product separation, and arrangement techniques to improve storage efficiency and reduce post-harvest losses.
