Abstract
Improved vegetable production technologies are agricultural innovations and recommended practices designed to increase vegetable productivity, improve produce quality, reduce production losses, and promote efficient use of farm resources. These technologies may include improved vegetable varieties, nursery management techniques, efficient irrigation systems, appropriate fertilizer application, integrated pest management, improved spacing, mulching, and other modern production methods. Extension training can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to understand and adopt these technologies effectively. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of improved vegetable production technologies. It will assess the extent to which extension training, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and technical guidance influence farmers’ adoption of improved technologies used in vegetable production. The study will also examine the relationship between farmers’ exposure to extension training and their use of recommended vegetable production technologies. The study will focus on extension training activities such as farmer education, demonstration plots, workshops, field days, farm visits, group discussions, and dissemination of technical information. It will examine farmers’ adoption of improved vegetable varieties, nursery and seedling management, recommended planting methods, appropriate spacing, fertilizer and manure application, efficient irrigation, mulching, integrated pest management, weed control, harvesting, and post-harvest handling technologies. Attention will also be given to farmers’ knowledge of the benefits, requirements, and proper application of these technologies. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from vegetable farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension training and adoption of improved vegetable production technologies. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of improved vegetable production technologies. Adoption levels across different technologies will also be assessed. The study is expected to reveal that extension training has a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of improved vegetable production technologies. Farmers who receive regular training, practical demonstrations, and technical guidance may be more likely to adopt improved varieties, recommended nutrient management, efficient irrigation, pest management, and other modern production practices. However, limited access to improved inputs, high technology costs, inadequate extension contact, insufficient technical knowledge, poor access to irrigation facilities, and limited availability of production equipment may constrain adoption. The study will be useful to vegetable farmers, agricultural extension agents, input suppliers, government agricultural agencies, farmer organizations, research institutions, development organizations, policymakers, and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector. The findings may assist extension agencies in designing practical training programmes that promote the effective use of improved vegetable production technologies. Increased adoption may contribute to improved vegetable productivity, better produce quality, efficient resource use, reduced production losses, and improved farm income. The study concludes that extension training can contribute to improved adoption of modern vegetable production technologies by providing farmers with relevant information, practical skills, and technical support. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen vegetable-focused training through demonstration plots, field days, farm visits, and continuous advisory services. Collaboration among extension organizations, research institutions, input suppliers, government agencies, farmer groups, and other agricultural stakeholders should also be encouraged to improve farmers’ access to appropriate technologies, inputs, and technical assistance.
