Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Improved Farm Labour Practices

Abstract

Improved farm labour practices involve the effective planning, organization, allocation, supervision, and management of human labour used in agricultural production activities. Appropriate labour management can help farmers reduce unnecessary labour costs, improve work efficiency, ensure timely completion of farm operations, and increase productivity. Extension training can provide farmers with knowledge and practical guidance on efficient labour planning and management practices suited to different agricultural enterprises. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of improved farm labour practices. It will assess the extent to which extension training improves farmers’ knowledge and use of appropriate labour management methods in agricultural production. The study will also examine the relationship between farmers’ exposure to extension training and their adoption of improved practices for organizing and managing farm labour. The study will focus on extension training activities such as farmer education, practical demonstrations, workshops, farm visits, group discussions, and distribution of technical information. It will examine farmers’ adoption of practices such as labour planning, task allocation, work scheduling, labour supervision, appropriate use of hired and family labour, labour productivity assessment, use of labour-saving technologies, worker safety, and proper coordination of farm operations. Attention will also be given to farmers’ ability to match available labour with seasonal production requirements. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension training and adoption of improved farm labour practices. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of improved farm labour practices. Adoption levels across different labour management practices will also be assessed. The study is expected to reveal that extension training has a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of improved farm labour practices. Farmers who receive practical training and technical guidance may be more likely to plan labour requirements, allocate tasks appropriately, schedule farm activities, supervise workers, and use labour-saving technologies. However, limited access to extension training, shortage of skilled labour, high labour costs, limited access to labour-saving equipment, and farmers’ inadequate knowledge of modern labour management techniques may restrict adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, farmer organizations, agricultural technology providers, government agricultural agencies, labour-intensive farm enterprises, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector. The findings may assist extension agencies in developing practical training programmes that improve farmers’ capacity to manage farm labour efficiently. Improved labour management may contribute to timely farm operations, reduced production costs, better worker organization, improved productivity, and more efficient use of available farm resources. The study concludes that extension training can contribute to improved adoption of farm labour practices by providing farmers with relevant knowledge, practical skills, and technical guidance. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen training on labour planning, task allocation, work scheduling, supervision, worker safety, and appropriate use of labour-saving technologies. Collaboration among extension organizations, farmer groups, agricultural technology providers, research institutions, and government agencies should also be encouraged to improve farmers’ access to labour management information and appropriate farm technologies.
