Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Traditional Crop Preservation Methods

Abstract

Traditional crop preservation methods involve indigenous techniques used by farmers to protect harvested crops from deterioration, pest infestation, moisture, spoilage, and quality losses during storage. These methods may include sun drying, smoking, traditional storage structures, use of natural preservatives, ash treatment, improved ventilation, and other locally developed practices. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with information and practical guidance on appropriate preservation methods while helping them improve the effectiveness of traditional practices used within their farming communities. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of traditional crop preservation methods. It will assess farmers’ access to extension services and determine the extent to which they adopt traditional methods for preserving harvested crops. The study will also examine the relationship between extension contact, advisory support, training, and farmers’ use of traditional crop preservation practices. The study will focus on extension contact frequency, advisory visits, extension training, demonstrations, farmer group activities, preservation information, and access to extension agents. Traditional crop preservation methods to be considered will include sun drying, smoking, traditional storage structures, use of ash and other locally available materials, proper ventilation, sorting, cleaning, and other indigenous preservation techniques used by farmers to reduce post-harvest losses. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension services and adoption of traditional crop preservation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while adoption indices, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of traditional preservation methods. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater access to extension services may demonstrate higher levels of adoption of appropriate traditional crop preservation methods. Regular advisory visits, practical demonstrations, training, and access to preservation information may improve farmers’ knowledge and application of these practices. However, inadequate extension coverage, limited access to preservation materials, labour requirements, lack of storage facilities, limited technical knowledge, and preference for alternative preservation methods may constrain adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural researchers, government agencies, non-governmental organisations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information on the role of extension services in promoting the continued use of suitable traditional crop preservation methods and reducing post-harvest losses. The findings may also assist extension organisations in developing preservation programmes that recognise useful indigenous practices while improving their application through appropriate technical guidance. The study concludes that extension services can contribute to farmers’ adoption and effective use of suitable traditional crop preservation methods by providing relevant information, training, demonstrations, and advisory support. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen farmer education on appropriate traditional preservation techniques through practical demonstrations, field training, advisory visits, farmer groups, and improved documentation of effective indigenous preservation practices.
