Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Produce Handling Hygiene

Abstract

Produce handling hygiene is an important aspect of agricultural production and postharvest management because harvested crops can easily become contaminated during handling, sorting, packaging, storage, transportation, and marketing. Poor hygiene practices may contribute to physical contamination, microbial contamination, spoilage, reduced produce quality, and postharvest losses. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with relevant information and practical guidance on hygienic handling procedures that help protect the quality and safety of agricultural produce. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of produce handling hygiene. It will assess the extent to which agricultural extension services improve farmers’ knowledge and use of recommended hygiene practices during the handling of harvested produce. The study will also determine the influence of extension education, advisory visits, demonstrations, and training on farmers’ adoption of practices such as hand hygiene, clean handling surfaces, hygienic sorting, clean packaging, proper storage, and prevention of cross-contamination. The study will focus on extension services, farmers’ knowledge of produce handling hygiene, personal hygiene, equipment cleanliness, sorting practices, packaging hygiene, storage hygiene, transportation hygiene, cross-contamination prevention, postharvest management, produce quality, food safety, and adoption of recommended hygiene practices. It will also assess farmers’ sources of information on produce hygiene and determine the extent to which extension agents provide practical guidance on maintaining hygienic conditions throughout postharvest handling activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension services, knowledge of produce handling hygiene, and level of adoption of recommended hygiene practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of produce handling hygiene. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of produce handling hygiene. Farmers who receive regular extension education and practical demonstrations may demonstrate greater knowledge and use of appropriate personal hygiene, clean equipment, hygienic sorting, clean packaging, proper storage, and safe transportation practices. The level of adoption may also vary according to farmers’ frequency of extension contact, access to clean handling facilities, type of produce handled, and availability of hygiene materials. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, postharvest specialists, food safety authorities, agricultural cooperatives, produce marketers, government agricultural agencies, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote hygienic postharvest handling and reduce contamination and produce losses. The findings may also assist relevant agencies in developing practical training programmes and demonstrations that improve farmers’ ability to maintain hygiene throughout the produce handling process. The study concludes that extension services can contribute to improved adoption of produce handling hygiene by increasing farmers’ knowledge and practical skills in safe postharvest management. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide regular education and practical demonstrations on personal hygiene, equipment sanitation, hygienic sorting, packaging, storage, transportation, and cross-contamination prevention. Farmers should also be encouraged to maintain clean handling environments and use appropriate hygiene materials to improve produce quality, reduce postharvest losses, and promote safer agricultural products.
