Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Hermetic Storage Technologies

Abstract

Hermetic storage technologies are improved postharvest storage methods that protect agricultural produce from moisture, insects, pests, and other factors that contribute to deterioration and storage losses. These technologies can provide farmers with effective alternatives to conventional storage methods by creating an airtight environment that helps maintain the quality and quantity of stored produce. Agricultural extension services can play an important role in providing farmers with information, demonstrations, and technical guidance on the appropriate use and management of hermetic storage technologies. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of hermetic storage technologies. It will assess the extent to which extension services influence farmers’ knowledge and use of hermetic storage methods. The study will also examine the contribution of extension visits, practical demonstrations, training programmes, advisory information, and technical support to farmers’ adoption of hermetic storage technologies. The study will focus on extension services, farmers’ knowledge of hermetic storage, hermetic bags, airtight storage containers, storage management practices, grain preservation, moisture management, pest control, storage duration, postharvest losses, produce quality, technology awareness, extension contact, and adoption of hermetic storage technologies. It will also assess farmers’ sources of information about hermetic storage and the challenges they encounter in adopting and using these technologies for agricultural produce preservation. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension services, knowledge of hermetic storage technologies, and level of adoption of recommended storage practices. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of hermetic storage technologies. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of hermetic storage technologies. Farmers who receive regular extension information, training, demonstrations, and technical guidance may demonstrate greater knowledge and increased use of hermetic bags, airtight containers, and other recommended storage technologies. Adoption may also be influenced by farmers’ access to storage materials, cost of the technologies, availability of extension services, awareness of postharvest losses, and perceived effectiveness of hermetic storage. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural cooperatives, postharvest specialists, government agricultural agencies, development organisations, produce processors, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at promoting improved postharvest storage technologies. The findings may also assist relevant stakeholders in developing practical training and technology dissemination programmes that encourage farmers to reduce storage losses and maintain the quality of stored agricultural produce. The study concludes that extension services can contribute to farmers’ adoption of hermetic storage technologies by improving their knowledge, awareness, and practical skills in postharvest storage management. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, demonstrations, advisory visits, and information dissemination on hermetic storage technologies. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt suitable hermetic storage methods to reduce pest damage, minimize postharvest losses, preserve produce quality, and improve the economic value of stored agricultural products.
