Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Knowledge of Terracing Techniques

Abstract

Terracing is an important soil and water conservation practice used to reduce soil erosion, control surface runoff, conserve soil moisture, and improve the productive capacity of agricultural land. The practice involves constructing and maintaining suitable terraces across sloping farmland to reduce the speed of flowing water and minimise the removal of fertile topsoil. However, inadequate knowledge of proper terracing techniques may limit farmers’ ability to establish and maintain effective terraces. Extension education can provide farmers with relevant information and practical skills needed to understand and apply appropriate terracing practices. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ knowledge of terracing techniques. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education and determine the extent to which such education influences their knowledge of appropriate terracing methods. The study will also examine farmers’ sources of information on soil and water conservation and identify the challenges affecting their access to extension education on terracing. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of terrace types, appropriate terrace alignment, site selection, terrace spacing, construction methods, slope management, water diversion, terrace maintenance, vegetation establishment, and erosion control. It will also consider farmers’ knowledge of how terracing contributes to soil moisture conservation, reduction of surface runoff, prevention of soil loss, and improvement of soil productivity. The study will further examine farmers’ participation in extension education programmes, practical demonstrations, field visits, and access to technical advisory information. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to extension education and their knowledge of terracing techniques. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, knowledge-level assessment, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ knowledge of terracing practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to extension education may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of appropriate terracing techniques. Extension training, demonstrations, and field-based education may improve farmers’ understanding of terrace alignment, construction, spacing, maintenance, runoff control, and erosion reduction. However, inadequate extension contact, high labour requirements, limited access to technical guidance, financial constraints, lack of suitable equipment, and limited awareness of conservation benefits may remain challenges affecting farmers’ knowledge. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, soil and water conservation specialists, farmer organisations, agricultural development agencies, policymakers, environmental management organisations, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension education programmes on soil conservation and improving farmers’ understanding of terracing techniques. The findings may also support efforts to reduce soil erosion, conserve soil moisture, protect agricultural land, and improve sustainable agricultural productivity. The study concludes that extension education is important for improving farmers’ knowledge of terracing techniques and promoting sustainable soil and water conservation. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical training, field demonstrations, farm visits, and advisory services on appropriate terracing techniques. Farmers should also be encouraged to participate actively in extension programmes and adopt suitable terrace construction and maintenance practices to reduce soil erosion and improve the long-term productivity of agricultural land.
