Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Knowledge of Papaya Production Techniques
Abstract
Papaya is an important fruit crop that contributes to food supply, household income, employment, and agricultural diversification. Its relatively short production cycle and nutritional value make it an important crop for many farming households. However, successful papaya production requires adequate knowledge of appropriate production techniques, including crop establishment, nutrient management, pest and disease control, and harvesting. Limited access to reliable technical information may affect farmers’ ability to apply recommended practices. Extension education can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical guidance required to improve papaya production. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ knowledge of papaya production techniques. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education and determine their level of knowledge of recommended papaya production practices. The study will also examine the relationship between farmers’ participation in extension education and their knowledge of appropriate papaya production techniques. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of suitable papaya varieties, site selection, land preparation, nursery management, seedling selection, planting methods, spacing, soil fertility management, irrigation and moisture management, weed control, pest and disease management, pruning, fruit thinning, harvesting, and post-harvest handling. It will also consider farmers’ access to extension agents, training programmes, farm demonstrations, advisory visits, and agricultural information on improved papaya production techniques. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from papaya farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension education and knowledge of recommended production techniques. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, knowledge-level assessment, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension education on farmers’ knowledge of papaya production techniques. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who have greater exposure to extension education may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of recommended papaya production techniques. Training, practical demonstrations, advisory visits, and access to relevant agricultural information may improve farmers’ understanding of crop establishment, soil and water management, pest and disease control, harvesting, and post-harvest practices. The study may also identify challenges such as inadequate extension contact, limited training opportunities, insufficient access to improved planting materials, and inadequate technical information. The study will be useful to papaya farmers, agricultural extension agents, horticultural organisations, agricultural development agencies, research institutions, policymakers, non-governmental organisations, farmer associations, and other stakeholders involved in fruit production. It may provide useful information for identifying farmers’ knowledge gaps and strengthening extension education programmes. The findings may also assist extension organisations in designing practical training and demonstration activities that address farmers’ specific papaya production needs. The study concludes that extension education is important for improving farmers’ knowledge of papaya production techniques. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, field demonstrations, advisory visits, and dissemination of relevant technical information on papaya production. Farmers should also be encouraged to participate in extension programmes and gain access to improved production technologies to strengthen their knowledge, improve crop management, and enhance papaya productivity.
