Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Knowledge of Irrigation Water Measurement

Abstract

Irrigation water measurement is an important practice in agricultural water management because it enables farmers to determine the quantity of water supplied to crops and manage irrigation resources more efficiently. Accurate measurement can help farmers avoid excessive or insufficient water application, reduce water losses, improve irrigation efficiency, and support better crop production. Extension education can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to understand and apply appropriate irrigation water measurement techniques. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ knowledge of irrigation water measurement. The study will assess farmers’ knowledge of basic water measurement principles and determine the extent to which extension education contributes to improved understanding of irrigation water measurement methods. It will also examine farmers’ exposure to extension education and identify areas where additional training and technical guidance may be required. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of water flow, irrigation volume, measurement units, timing of water application, water discharge rates, and the use of simple and improved water measurement devices. It will also consider farmers’ knowledge of measuring water delivered through irrigation channels, pipes, pumps, and other systems, as well as their ability to use measurement information when determining appropriate irrigation requirements. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to extension education and knowledge of irrigation water measurement. The collected data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations to determine farmers’ knowledge levels, while correlation and regression analyses will be used to examine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ knowledge of irrigation water measurement. The study is expected to reveal differences in farmers’ knowledge of irrigation water measurement based on their exposure to extension education. Farmers who participate in practical training, demonstrations, farm visits, and irrigation advisory programmes may demonstrate better understanding of water measurement techniques and appropriate measurement units. The study may also identify knowledge gaps relating to flow measurement, water volume estimation, use of measurement devices, and interpretation of irrigation water data. The study will be useful to irrigation farmers, agricultural extension agents, irrigation development agencies, water resource authorities, agricultural development programmes, farmers’ associations, policymakers, researchers, and irrigation specialists. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening extension education programmes and improving farmers’ technical capacity to measure and manage irrigation water effectively. The study concludes that extension education can contribute to improving farmers’ knowledge of irrigation water measurement and support more efficient management of agricultural water resources. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension and irrigation agencies strengthen farmer education through practical demonstrations, field training, farm visits, and simple instructional materials on water measurement techniques. Farmers should also be encouraged to measure irrigation water regularly and use the information obtained to improve water application, reduce wastage, and support sustainable irrigation management.
