Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Knowledge of Greenhouse Crop Management

Abstract

Greenhouse crop management involves the controlled production of crops within protected structures where environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, light, irrigation, and ventilation can be managed to support crop growth and productivity. Greenhouse production can enable farmers to protect crops from adverse weather conditions, pests, and diseases while improving production efficiency and allowing cultivation under controlled conditions. Extension education can provide farmers with the knowledge and technical skills required to understand and manage greenhouse production systems effectively. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ knowledge of greenhouse crop management. It will assess the extent to which extension education improves farmers’ understanding of the principles and practices involved in managing crops under greenhouse conditions. The study will also examine farmers’ knowledge of greenhouse environmental management, crop production practices, pest and disease control, irrigation, and harvesting following exposure to extension education. The study will focus on extension education activities such as farmer training, practical demonstrations, workshops, farm visits, group discussions, and dissemination of technical information. It will examine farmers’ knowledge of greenhouse site selection, structure management, temperature and humidity control, ventilation, irrigation and fertigation, seedling establishment, crop spacing, pruning, staking, nutrient management, pest and disease monitoring, sanitation, harvesting, and post-harvest handling. Attention will also be given to farmers’ understanding of greenhouse equipment, routine maintenance, and efficient use of production resources. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to extension education and their knowledge of greenhouse crop management. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ knowledge of greenhouse crop management. Where applicable, farmers’ knowledge levels before and after exposure to extension education will also be compared. The study is expected to reveal that extension education has a positive effect on farmers’ knowledge of greenhouse crop management. Farmers who receive practical training, demonstrations, and continuous technical guidance may demonstrate better understanding of environmental control, irrigation, nutrient management, crop maintenance, and pest and disease management. However, limited access to greenhouse facilities, inadequate technical training, high establishment and operating costs, insufficient extension contact, and limited availability of appropriate equipment may constrain farmers’ knowledge and practical application of greenhouse management techniques. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, greenhouse operators, agricultural technology providers, government agricultural agencies, research institutions, farmer organizations, policymakers, and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector. The findings may assist extension agencies in developing practical training programmes that improve farmers’ knowledge of protected agriculture and greenhouse crop management. Improved knowledge may contribute to better crop management, efficient resource use, improved productivity, and more effective utilization of greenhouse production systems. The study concludes that extension education is an important avenue for improving farmers’ knowledge of greenhouse crop management. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen greenhouse-focused training through practical demonstrations, field-based learning, farm visits, technical manuals, and continuous advisory support. Collaboration among extension organizations, greenhouse technology providers, research institutions, government agencies, and farmer groups should also be encouraged to improve farmers’ access to appropriate greenhouse technologies and technical knowledge.
