Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Knowledge of Fruit Tree Management

Abstract

Fruit tree management involves a range of agricultural practices used to establish, maintain, protect, and improve the productivity of fruit trees. Effective management practices such as proper planting, pruning, watering, fertilization, weed control, pest and disease management, mulching, and appropriate harvesting are important for maintaining healthy trees and improving fruit yield and quality. Farmers’ knowledge of these practices is therefore essential for effective orchard management and sustainable fruit production. Agricultural extension education provides farmers with information, training, demonstrations, and technical guidance that can improve their understanding and application of recommended fruit tree management practices. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ knowledge of fruit tree management. The study will assess the level of knowledge farmers possess before and after exposure to extension education and determine the extent to which extension education contributes to their understanding of recommended fruit tree management practices. It will also examine the sources through which farmers obtain information on fruit tree management and the accessibility of extension education services. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of fruit tree establishment, planting methods, spacing, pruning, grafting, irrigation, fertilizer and manure application, mulching, weed management, pest and disease control, soil fertility management, orchard sanitation, harvesting, and post-harvest handling. Attention will also be given to farmers’ exposure to extension meetings, farm visits, demonstrations, training programmes, farmer field activities, and other advisory methods used to communicate fruit tree management information. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected fruit farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their knowledge of recommended fruit tree management practices and their exposure to extension education activities. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while inferential techniques such as correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ knowledge of fruit tree management. The study is expected to reveal differences in farmers’ knowledge of fruit tree management based on their level of exposure to extension education. Farmers who receive regular extension information, practical demonstrations, training, and farm visits may demonstrate better knowledge of recommended management practices. The study may also identify areas where farmers have limited knowledge and reveal challenges such as inadequate extension contact, limited access to technical information, high input costs, shortage of planting materials, and insufficient practical training. The study will be useful to fruit farmers, agricultural extension agents, horticultural organisations, farmer associations, agricultural development agencies, government institutions, researchers, and policymakers. The findings may provide useful information for designing extension programmes that address farmers’ specific knowledge gaps and improve the delivery of fruit production information. Improved knowledge may support better orchard management, healthier fruit trees, improved fruit yield and quality, reduced production losses, and increased farm income. The study concludes that extension education is an important component of improving farmers’ knowledge of fruit tree management because it provides farmers with relevant technical information and practical guidance on recommended production practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen fruit tree management education through regular farm visits, demonstrations, training programmes, farmer field schools, and practical advisory services. Extension programmes should also improve farmers’ access to relevant technical information, improved planting materials, and appropriate management inputs to support effective fruit production.
