Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Solar Drying Technology

Abstract

Solar drying technology is an improved postharvest method that uses solar energy to reduce the moisture content of agricultural produce and enhance its preservation. Compared with traditional open-air drying, solar drying can provide better protection against dust, insects, rainfall, and other sources of contamination while improving the quality of dried products. Extension education can play an important role in providing farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to understand, operate, and maintain solar drying technologies. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of solar drying technology. It will assess the extent to which extension education influences farmers’ awareness, knowledge, and use of solar drying methods for preserving agricultural produce. The study will also examine the contribution of extension training, demonstrations, advisory visits, and information dissemination to farmers’ adoption of solar drying technology. The study will focus on extension education, farmers’ knowledge of solar drying, solar dryers, drying procedures, moisture management, drying duration, produce quality, postharvest preservation, contamination prevention, storage preparation, technology awareness, extension contact, and adoption of solar drying technology. It will also examine farmers’ sources of information about solar drying and identify challenges that may affect their ability to adopt and effectively use solar drying equipment. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension education, knowledge of solar drying technology, and level of adoption. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of solar drying technology. The study is expected to reveal that extension education may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of solar drying technology. Farmers who receive regular extension training, demonstrations, and technical guidance may demonstrate greater knowledge and increased use of solar drying equipment and recommended drying procedures. The level of adoption may also vary according to farmers’ access to extension services, cost and availability of solar dryers, technical knowledge, type of agricultural produce handled, and perceived benefits of the technology. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, postharvest specialists, agricultural cooperatives, produce processors, government agricultural agencies, development organisations, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote improved postharvest technologies and reduce losses associated with traditional drying practices. The findings may also assist stakeholders in developing practical and affordable training programmes that encourage farmers to adopt solar drying technology. The study concludes that extension education can contribute to improved adoption of solar drying technology by increasing farmers’ knowledge, awareness, and practical skills in postharvest drying and preservation. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen training, demonstrations, advisory visits, and information dissemination on the proper use and maintenance of solar dryers. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt suitable solar drying technologies to improve produce quality, reduce postharvest losses, extend shelf life, and increase the value of agricultural products.
