Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Shelterbelt Management Practices
Abstract
The study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of shelterbelt management practices. Shelterbelts are important agricultural landscape features that can reduce wind speed, protect crops and soil from wind erosion, conserve moisture, and provide habitat for beneficial organisms. Proper management of shelterbelts is therefore important for maintaining their effectiveness and supporting sustainable agricultural production. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of shelterbelt management practices, including selection of suitable tree and shrub species, proper planting arrangement, maintenance of vegetation, replacement of damaged plants, pruning, protection from uncontrolled grazing, prevention of unnecessary removal, and regular monitoring of shelterbelt condition. It will also examine the role of extension education in providing farmers with knowledge and practical guidance on establishing, maintaining, and managing effective shelterbelts. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension education and their adoption of shelterbelt management practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ exposure to extension education and the extent to which they adopt recommended shelterbelt management practices. It is also expected to identify areas where farmers demonstrate adequate or inadequate adoption, particularly in relation to species selection, planting arrangement, maintenance, pruning, replacement of damaged plants, and protection of shelterbelt vegetation. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, forestry development agencies, agricultural development organizations, farmers’ organizations, and policymakers by providing information on the contribution of extension education to improved shelterbelt management. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes and field demonstrations that promote effective wind protection and sustainable management of farm vegetation. The study will conclude that extension education can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills needed for effective shelterbelt management. It will recommend regular extension training, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and technical guidance on species selection, planting, maintenance, pruning, and protection of shelterbelt vegetation to encourage farmers’ adoption of appropriate shelterbelt management practices.
