Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Seed Preservation Practices

Abstract

Seed preservation practices involve the use of appropriate methods for maintaining seed quality, viability, and germination capacity from harvest or purchase until the seeds are required for planting. Proper seed preservation is important because poor handling and storage conditions can lead to moisture damage, pest infestation, deterioration, loss of viability, and reduced germination. Practices such as proper seed selection, drying, cleaning, treatment, packaging, moisture control, storage, pest management, and regular inspection can help farmers preserve seeds effectively. Extension education provides farmers with relevant information, technical guidance, and practical skills that can encourage the adoption of appropriate seed preservation practices. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of seed preservation practices. The study will assess the level of adoption of recommended seed preservation practices among farmers and determine the extent to which exposure to extension education influences their adoption. It will also examine farmers’ access to extension education, frequency of extension contact, and the major sources of information available to farmers on seed preservation and storage. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of improved seed selection, cleaning, drying, seed treatment, moisture control, appropriate packaging, storage facility management, pest and insect control, protection from contamination, regular inspection, and proper handling of stored seeds. Attention will also be given to extension education methods such as farm visits, practical demonstrations, training programmes, farmer meetings, field days, and other advisory activities used to promote improved seed preservation practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension education and adoption of recommended seed preservation practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of seed preservation practices. The study is expected to reveal differences in the adoption of seed preservation practices among farmers based on their level of exposure to extension education. Farmers who receive regular extension information, practical demonstrations, training, and technical guidance may demonstrate higher adoption of recommended preservation practices. The study may also identify constraints affecting adoption, including inadequate extension contact, limited access to appropriate storage facilities, high cost of storage and packaging materials, pest infestation, poor moisture control, and insufficient technical knowledge. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, seed producers, agricultural development agencies, farmer associations, government institutions, researchers, and policymakers. The findings may provide useful information for designing extension programmes that improve farmers’ adoption of effective seed preservation practices. Increased adoption may contribute to reduced seed losses, improved seed viability and germination, better crop establishment, reduced production costs, and increased agricultural productivity and farm income. The study concludes that extension education is an important means of promoting farmers’ adoption of appropriate seed preservation practices by providing relevant knowledge, practical skills, and technical guidance. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen seed preservation education through practical demonstrations, training programmes, farm visits, field days, and regular advisory services. Farmers should also be supported with appropriate storage facilities, quality packaging materials, seed treatment information, and timely technical guidance to encourage effective preservation of seeds.
