Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Produce Measurement Practices

Abstract

The study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of produce measurement practices. Accurate measurement of agricultural produce is an important farm management and marketing activity that enables farmers to determine the quantity of products available for sale, maintain reliable records, support fair transactions, and improve decisions concerning storage, transportation, and marketing. Proper produce measurement can also help reduce disputes and improve transparency between farmers and buyers. The study will focus on the extent to which farmers adopt appropriate produce measurement practices following extension education. Specific areas will include the selection and use of suitable measuring equipment, accurate weighing, volume measurement, counting of produce units, standardization of measurement procedures, verification of measured quantities, recording of measurements, and proper maintenance of measurement equipment. Extension education is expected to provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills for applying accurate measurement procedures during farm operations and produce transactions. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension education, knowledge of produce measurement, and adoption of relevant measurement practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal that extension education contributes to farmers’ adoption of appropriate produce measurement practices. The findings may indicate improvements in the use of suitable measurement equipment, accuracy of measurements, verification of quantities, recording of measured produce, and maintenance of measurement devices. The study may also identify challenges that limit farmers’ consistent application of standardized produce measurement practices. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, produce marketers, and policymakers by providing information on the role of extension education in improving produce measurement practices. The findings may also assist extension personnel in designing practical educational programmes that strengthen farmers’ measurement skills and promote greater accuracy and transparency in agricultural produce transactions. The study will conclude that effective extension education can enhance farmers’ knowledge and adoption of produce measurement practices. It will recommend that agricultural extension officers provide practical demonstrations, training sessions, and follow-up advisory services on the selection, operation, verification, and maintenance of measurement equipment to promote accurate produce measurement and improve farmers’ marketing practices.
