Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Harvest Field Inspection

Abstract

Harvest field inspection is an important agricultural practice that involves examining farm fields and crops before and during harvesting to determine their readiness, condition, and suitability for harvest. Proper field inspection can help farmers identify crop maturity, detect damaged or diseased plants, assess field conditions, and make timely harvesting decisions. Extension education can provide farmers with relevant knowledge, practical skills, and technical guidance needed to understand and apply appropriate harvest field inspection practices. The study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of harvest field inspection. Specifically, it will assess farmers’ access to extension education on harvest field inspection, determine the extent of educational support received, examine farmers’ level of adoption of recommended field inspection practices, and identify the major factors influencing their adoption of harvest field inspection. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on extension education and the adoption of harvest field inspection practices. Appropriate sampling techniques will be used to select respondents, while the collected data will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Inferential statistical techniques may also be employed to determine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of harvest field inspection. The study is expected to find that extension education has a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of harvest field inspection practices. Farmers who receive regular educational information, practical demonstrations, technical guidance, and follow-up support are expected to demonstrate greater application of field inspection practices. However, inadequate extension contact, limited technical knowledge, labour constraints, insufficient training opportunities, and reliance on traditional harvesting practices may constrain adoption among some farmers. The findings are expected to provide useful information for agricultural extension officers, policymakers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, and other stakeholders involved in crop production and postharvest management. Improved extension education may strengthen farmers’ ability to conduct systematic field inspections and make timely harvesting decisions, thereby contributing to improved produce quality and reduced avoidable harvesting losses. The study will conclude that effective extension education is important for promoting farmers’ adoption of harvest field inspection practices. It will recommend increased extension visits, practical field demonstrations, farmer training programmes, timely technical information, and continuous advisory support to encourage the effective use of harvest field inspection practices among farmers.
