Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Farm Succession Records
Abstract
Farm succession records are documents used to organise and preserve important information relating to the future transfer of farm ownership, management responsibilities, assets, and other resources from one generation to another. Proper succession records can support continuity in family farming by providing clear information about farm assets, management arrangements, intended successors, and important farm decisions. Extension education can provide farmers with knowledge and practical guidance on the importance and proper maintenance of such records. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of farm succession records. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education and determine the extent to which they adopt and maintain records relevant to farm succession. The study will also examine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of farm succession record-keeping practices. The study will focus on extension training, advisory visits, farm management education, demonstrations, workshops, and information provided by extension agents on succession planning and record keeping. Farm succession records to be considered will include farm asset records, ownership records, successor information, farm management records, land documentation, livestock records, machinery records, financial records, and written succession plans. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension education and adoption of farm succession records. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while adoption indices, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of succession record-keeping practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular extension education may demonstrate greater adoption of farm succession records. Training, demonstrations, advisory visits, and practical guidance may improve farmers’ understanding of the importance of documenting farm assets, ownership arrangements, management responsibilities, and succession plans. However, limited extension coverage, inadequate knowledge of record keeping, reluctance to document family arrangements, perceived complexity of record maintenance, and limited access to advisory support may constrain adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, farming families, agricultural researchers, government agencies, non-governmental organisations, financial institutions, and policymakers. It may provide useful information on the contribution of extension education to farm succession record keeping and identify gaps in farmers’ preparedness for intergenerational farm transfer. The findings may also assist extension organisations in developing practical farm management and succession planning programmes. The study concludes that extension education can contribute to farmers’ adoption of appropriate farm succession records by improving their knowledge of documentation, planning, and intergenerational farm management. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies incorporate succession record keeping into farm management education through practical training, demonstrations, advisory visits, family farm workshops, and simplified record-keeping materials to encourage farmers to maintain accurate records for future farm succession.
