Effect of Extension Agents’ Communication Skills on Farmers’ Understanding of Agricultural Information

Abstract

Communication skills are essential competencies for agricultural extension agents because the effectiveness of extension services depends partly on how clearly and appropriately agricultural information is presented to farmers. Extension agents are expected to communicate technical information in ways that farmers can understand, interpret, and apply to their farming activities. Effective communication can improve information exchange, reduce misunderstandings, encourage farmer participation, and support better use of agricultural knowledge and technologies. This study will examine the effect of extension agents’ communication skills on farmers’ understanding of agricultural information. The study will assess the communication skills of extension agents, determine farmers’ level of understanding of agricultural information, and examine the influence of agents’ communication abilities on farmers’ comprehension of extension messages. It will also identify communication-related challenges that may affect the effective transfer of agricultural information to farmers. The study will focus on communication skills such as clarity of speech, active listening, questioning, explanation, use of simple language, feedback, non-verbal communication, interpersonal communication, presentation skills, and adaptation of technical information to farmers’ educational and experiential backgrounds. It will also examine farmers’ understanding of agricultural information relating to crop production, livestock management, farm inputs, pest management, soil conservation, agricultural marketing, and other relevant farming activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from extension agents and farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on agents’ communication skills and farmers’ understanding of agricultural information. The data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension agents’ communication skills and farmers’ understanding of agricultural information. The study is expected to reveal that stronger communication skills among extension agents may be associated with better understanding of agricultural information among farmers. Clear explanations, appropriate language, active listening, effective questioning, and regular feedback may improve farmers’ comprehension of technical information. However, differences in farmers’ educational backgrounds, language, previous knowledge, cultural context, and access to extension services may influence their understanding of agricultural messages. The study will be useful to agricultural extension agents, farmers, extension management authorities, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ associations, rural development organisations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. The findings may provide useful information for improving extension communication practices and developing training programmes that strengthen agents’ ability to communicate agricultural information effectively to diverse farming communities. The study concludes that extension agents’ communication skills are important for effective transmission and understanding of agricultural information among farmers. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension authorities strengthen communication training for extension agents, with emphasis on clear language, active listening, feedback, questioning, interpersonal communication, and effective presentation techniques. Extension agents should also adapt their communication methods to farmers’ local languages, educational levels, experiences, and information needs to improve understanding and application of agricultural information.
