Effect of Agricultural Extension Services on Farmers’ Participation in On-Farm Research

Abstract

On-farm research is an important approach to agricultural research that involves conducting research activities under farmers’ actual production conditions. It provides opportunities for farmers to contribute to problem identification, technology testing, field observations, evaluation of agricultural practices, and provision of practical feedback. Agricultural extension services can facilitate farmers’ involvement in on-farm research by providing information, technical guidance, research linkages, and opportunities for participation. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ participation in on-farm research. It will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension services and determine the extent to which they participate in on-farm research activities. The study will also examine the relationship between access to agricultural extension services and farmers’ participation in on-farm research. The study will focus on farmers’ participation in activities such as identifying farm-level research problems, selecting technologies for testing, establishing on-farm trials, observing crop or livestock performance, comparing agricultural practices, recording field observations, evaluating research outcomes, and providing feedback to researchers and extension agents. It will also consider farmers’ exposure to extension visits, demonstrations, farmer field days, training programmes, research meetings, and linkages with agricultural research institutions. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their exposure to agricultural extension services and participation in on-farm research activities. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, participation indices, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the extent of participation and the relationship between agricultural extension services and farmers’ involvement in on-farm research. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater access to agricultural extension services may demonstrate higher levels of participation in on-farm research activities. Regular extension contact, practical demonstrations, research information, and linkages with research institutions may encourage farmers to participate in field trials and provide useful feedback. However, inadequate extension coverage, limited research opportunities, logistical difficulties, insufficient information, lack of research resources, and weak communication between farmers and researchers may constrain participation. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural researchers, research institutions, agricultural development agencies, farmer organisations, policymakers, and non-governmental organisations. It may provide useful information on the role of agricultural extension services in promoting farmer participation in on-farm research. The findings may also assist research and extension organisations in developing participatory approaches that incorporate farmers’ experiences, knowledge, and practical observations into agricultural research activities. The study concludes that agricultural extension services can contribute to farmers’ participation in on-farm research by providing relevant information, technical guidance, and linkages with research institutions. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen participatory extension approaches through on-farm trials, demonstrations, farmer field days, research meetings, and regular advisory visits. Greater collaboration among farmers, extension agents, researchers, and agricultural development organisations should also be encouraged to improve farmers’ meaningful participation in on-farm research.
