Effect of Agricultural Extension Services on Farmers’ Knowledge of Farm-Level Food Safety

Abstract

Farm-level food safety is an important aspect of agricultural production because unsafe farming practices can introduce biological, chemical, and physical hazards into food products before they reach consumers. Farmers play a major role in maintaining food safety through appropriate use of agrochemicals, hygienic handling of farm produce, safe water use, proper waste disposal, and adherence to recommended production practices. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with the knowledge and guidance required to understand and apply appropriate food safety measures at the farm level. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ knowledge of farm-level food safety. The study will assess the level of farmers’ knowledge of food safety practices and determine the extent to which exposure to agricultural extension services contributes to their understanding of safe agricultural production. It will also examine the forms of extension support received by farmers and the relationship between extension contact and knowledge of farm-level food safety practices. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of agrochemical handling, pesticide application, fertilizer use, personal hygiene, clean water use, farm waste management, harvesting hygiene, produce handling, storage practices, and prevention of contamination during agricultural production. It will also consider farmers’ sources of food safety information, frequency of contact with extension agents, participation in extension training, demonstrations, farm visits, and access to agricultural advisory materials. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their exposure to agricultural extension services and their knowledge of farm-level food safety practices. The collected data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between agricultural extension services and farmers’ knowledge of food safety. The study is expected to reveal variations in farmers’ knowledge of farm-level food safety practices based on their exposure to agricultural extension services. Farmers who receive regular extension contacts, training, demonstrations, and advisory information may demonstrate better knowledge of safe production practices than those with limited access to extension services. The study may also identify gaps in farmers’ understanding of agrochemical safety, hygiene, contamination prevention, produce handling, and waste management. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, food safety agencies, agricultural development programmes, farmers’ associations, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders involved in agricultural production and food safety. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote safe farming practices and improving farmers’ awareness of food safety requirements at the production level. The study concludes that agricultural extension services may play an important role in improving farmers’ knowledge of farm-level food safety. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen food safety education through regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, training programmes, advisory materials, and continuous communication with farmers. Farmers should also be encouraged to participate actively in extension programmes and apply recommended food safety practices throughout the production and handling of agricultural produce.
