Effect of Agricultural Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Plant Population Management

Abstract

Perishable agricultural produce such as fruits, vegetables, milk, eggs, and other fresh farm products requires careful inventory management because of its limited shelf life and susceptibility to physical damage, spoilage, and quality deterioration. Effective inventory management helps farmers monitor quantities, storage duration, product movement, and available marketable produce. However, inadequate knowledge of inventory management practices may contribute to unnecessary losses, poor stock control, and inefficient marketing decisions. Assessing farmers’ knowledge of perishable agricultural produce inventory management is therefore important for improving postharvest handling and reducing avoidable losses. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of perishable agricultural produce inventory management. The study will determine farmers’ level of knowledge of inventory management practices and assess their understanding of stock recording, quantity monitoring, storage duration, product classification, stock rotation, spoilage monitoring, and timely marketing of perishable produce. It will also identify areas where farmers may have limited knowledge of inventory management procedures. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of perishable produce inventory management, stock recording, quantity estimation, product identification, stock monitoring, storage duration, stock rotation, spoilage detection, inventory documentation, market planning, storage management, and postharvest loss prevention. Information will be obtained from farmers involved in the production and handling of perishable agricultural produce to determine their knowledge and application of appropriate inventory management practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data. Knowledge scores will be used to assess farmers’ level of understanding, while relevant inferential statistical techniques may be used to examine associations between farmers’ characteristics and their knowledge of perishable produce inventory management. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding inventory management for perishable agricultural produce. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of quantity monitoring, stock recording, and spoilage identification, while others may have limited knowledge of stock rotation, storage-duration monitoring, inventory documentation, and timely market planning. The study may also identify specific knowledge gaps that contribute to inefficient stock management and increased postharvest losses. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, produce marketers, storage operators, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for developing farmer education and extension programmes on inventory management for perishable agricultural produce. The findings may also assist stakeholders in promoting practical inventory management methods that improve stock control, reduce spoilage, and support more efficient marketing of fresh farm products. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge of inventory management is important for effective handling and preservation of perishable agricultural produce. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education on stock recording, quantity monitoring, product classification, stock rotation, spoilage detection, storage-duration monitoring, and timely marketing. Practical demonstrations and follow-up advisory services should also be provided to improve farmers’ knowledge and application of appropriate inventory management practices.
