Effect of Agricultural Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Indigenous Agricultural Practices

Abstract

Indigenous agricultural practices represent traditional knowledge and techniques developed by farming communities over time to manage crops, livestock, soil, water, farm resources, and other aspects of agricultural production. These practices may be adapted to local environmental conditions and can contribute to resource conservation, production management, and farmers’ resilience. Agricultural extension services can play an important role in documenting, communicating, improving, and encouraging the appropriate use of indigenous agricultural practices alongside other agricultural knowledge. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ adoption of indigenous agricultural practices. It will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension services and determine the extent to which they adopt selected indigenous practices in their farming activities. The study will also examine the relationship between access to extension services and farmers’ adoption of indigenous agricultural practices. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of indigenous practices relating to soil fertility management, seed selection and preservation, pest management, crop diversification, water conservation, organic resource utilisation, traditional weather indicators, crop storage, livestock management, and other locally developed production techniques. It will also consider farmers’ exposure to extension visits, demonstrations, farmer meetings, training programmes, advisory information, and participatory extension activities through which indigenous agricultural knowledge may be discussed and improved. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their access to agricultural extension services and adoption of selected indigenous agricultural practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, adoption indices, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the level of adoption and the relationship between agricultural extension services and farmers’ adoption of indigenous practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater access to relevant agricultural extension services may demonstrate higher adoption of selected indigenous agricultural practices. Extension contact, practical demonstrations, participatory training, and information exchange may improve farmers’ awareness and understanding of the usefulness of appropriate indigenous techniques. However, limited extension coverage, inadequate documentation of indigenous knowledge, preference for modern practices, limited technical support, and insufficient recognition of local knowledge may affect adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, traditional farming communities, policymakers, researchers, and non-governmental organisations. It may provide useful information on the role of agricultural extension services in supporting the preservation and appropriate use of indigenous agricultural knowledge. The findings may also assist extension organisations in developing participatory programmes that combine farmers’ local knowledge with relevant agricultural innovations. The study concludes that agricultural extension services can contribute to farmers’ adoption and effective use of appropriate indigenous agricultural practices. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen participatory advisory approaches that recognise farmers’ indigenous knowledge and encourage the exchange of locally developed agricultural practices. Extension agents should also document useful indigenous techniques and provide appropriate technical guidance to support their safe, efficient, and sustainable application.
