Effect of Agricultural Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Farm Tourism Practices

Abstract

Farm tourism is an emerging form of agricultural diversification that allows farmers to combine farming activities with tourism experiences and services. It can involve farm visits, agricultural demonstrations, recreational activities, educational tours, cultural experiences, direct sales of farm products, farm-based accommodation, food experiences, and other activities that attract visitors to agricultural communities. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with information, technical guidance, and practical support needed to understand and adopt appropriate farm tourism practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ adoption of farm tourism practices. It will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension services and determine the extent to which they adopt selected farm tourism practices. The study will also examine the relationship between access to agricultural extension services and farmers’ adoption of farm tourism practices. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of practices such as organising farm tours, establishing demonstration areas, providing educational farm experiences, presenting agricultural products to visitors, offering recreational activities, promoting farm products, maintaining visitor-friendly farm environments, providing basic visitor facilities, and incorporating cultural or agricultural experiences into farm activities. It will also consider farmers’ exposure to extension visits, training programmes, demonstrations, advisory meetings, farm visits, and information relating to tourism and agricultural enterprise development. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their exposure to agricultural extension services and adoption of farm tourism practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, adoption indices, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the level of adoption and the relationship between agricultural extension services and farmers’ adoption of farm tourism practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater access to agricultural extension services may demonstrate higher adoption of appropriate farm tourism practices. Regular extension contact, practical demonstrations, training, and advisory information may improve farmers’ knowledge of tourism planning, visitor management, product presentation, marketing, and farm diversification. However, inadequate extension coverage, limited tourism information, poor infrastructure, financial constraints, lack of tourism facilities, and limited business management knowledge may constrain farmers’ adoption of farm tourism practices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, rural development agencies, tourism authorities, agricultural cooperatives, policymakers, researchers, and non-governmental organisations. It may provide useful information on the role of agricultural extension services in promoting farm tourism and diversifying farmers’ sources of income. The findings may also assist extension organisations in developing advisory programmes that integrate agricultural production, tourism, entrepreneurship, and rural enterprise development. The study concludes that agricultural extension services can contribute to farmers’ adoption of appropriate farm tourism practices by providing relevant knowledge, technical guidance, and practical support. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies incorporate farm tourism into relevant farmer training and advisory programmes. Extension agents should provide practical guidance on farm tourism planning, visitor management, marketing, product presentation, and enterprise development, while relevant authorities should improve farmers’ access to tourism infrastructure, information, and support services.
