Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Use of Geographic Information for Farm Planning

Abstract

Geographic information provides farmers with spatial information that can support the planning, management, and monitoring of agricultural activities. Information on farm location, soil characteristics, land use, water resources, field boundaries, weather patterns, and other spatial features can assist farmers in making informed decisions about land preparation, crop selection, resource allocation, and farm management. Agricultural extension services can play an important role in helping farmers understand and apply geographic information in practical farm planning. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ use of geographic information for farm planning. It will assess the extent to which extension services provide farmers with information, training, and technical guidance on the use of geographic information for agricultural decision-making. The study will also determine the relationship between farmers’ access to extension services and their use of geographic information in planning farm activities. The study will focus on extension training, advisory services, demonstrations, technical guidance, and information dissemination relating to geographic information and spatial farm management. It will examine farmers’ use of information on farm boundaries, soil characteristics, land suitability, water sources, elevation, land use, weather patterns, and other geographic features for farm planning. The study will also consider farmers’ exposure to tools and technologies such as digital maps, GPS devices, satellite imagery, mobile mapping applications, and other location-based agricultural information systems. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their access to agricultural extension services and their use of geographic information for farm planning. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Correlation and regression analysis will also be used to examine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ use of geographic information in farm planning. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension may have a positive effect on farmers’ use of geographic information for farm planning. Farmers who receive relevant training, demonstrations, and technical guidance may demonstrate greater awareness and use of spatial information when making decisions concerning land selection, crop placement, resource allocation, and farm management. However, limited access to digital devices, inadequate technical skills, poor internet connectivity, high technology costs, and insufficient extension support may restrict the use of geographic information among some farmers. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, government agricultural agencies, geospatial technology providers, research institutions, agricultural development organisations, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that introduce farmers to geographic information and location-based agricultural technologies. The study may also assist extension organisations in developing practical demonstrations and training materials that make spatial agricultural information easier for farmers to understand and apply. The study concludes that agricultural extension can contribute to farmers’ effective use of geographic information by providing the knowledge and technical guidance required for applying spatial information to farm planning. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies should strengthen training and demonstrations on geographic information, digital mapping, GPS applications, and other relevant spatial technologies. Collaboration among extension organisations, research institutions, geospatial technology providers, and farmer groups should also be encouraged to improve farmers’ access to appropriate geographic information for effective farm planning.
