Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Participation in Variety Evaluation

Abstract

Variety evaluation is an important agricultural research activity that involves assessing the performance, suitability, and acceptability of crop varieties under farmers’ production conditions. Farmers’ participation in variety evaluation can provide valuable information on characteristics such as yield, maturity period, adaptability, pest and disease tolerance, food quality, market preference, and ease of production. Agricultural extension can facilitate farmers’ involvement by providing information, organising field activities, and linking farmers with research institutions and improved crop variety programmes. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ participation in variety evaluation. It will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension services and determine the extent to which they participate in evaluating different crop varieties. The study will also examine the relationship between agricultural extension contact and farmers’ participation in variety evaluation activities. The study will focus on farmers’ participation in activities such as identifying preferred crop varieties, observing variety trials, comparing crop performance, assessing yield characteristics, evaluating maturity periods, providing feedback on crop quality, identifying varieties suited to local conditions, and participating in field demonstrations and on-farm variety trials. It will also consider farmers’ exposure to extension visits, demonstrations, farmer field days, training programmes, research activities, and linkages with agricultural research institutions. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their exposure to agricultural extension services and participation in variety evaluation activities. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, participation indices, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the extent of participation and the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ involvement in variety evaluation. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension services may demonstrate higher participation in variety evaluation activities. Extension visits, field demonstrations, farmer field days, and research linkages may improve farmers’ awareness of evaluation opportunities and encourage them to provide feedback on crop variety performance. However, limited extension contact, inadequate research-farmer linkages, lack of information, logistical challenges, limited access to trial sites, and insufficient opportunities for participatory evaluation may constrain farmers’ participation. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural researchers, research institutions, seed development organisations, farmer cooperatives, policymakers, and non-governmental organisations. It may provide useful information on the role of agricultural extension in encouraging farmers to participate in variety evaluation and contribute practical knowledge to crop improvement programmes. The findings may also assist research and extension organisations in strengthening farmer involvement in the assessment and selection of suitable crop varieties. The study concludes that agricultural extension can contribute to farmers’ participation in variety evaluation by providing information, technical guidance, and linkages with agricultural research activities. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen participatory extension approaches by organising field demonstrations, on-farm trials, farmer field days, and practical evaluation activities. Stronger collaboration between farmers, extension agents, researchers, and seed organisations should also be encouraged to improve farmer participation in variety evaluation.
