Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Participation in Agricultural Value Chain Activities
Abstract
Agricultural value chain activities involve the various stages through which agricultural products move from input supply and production to harvesting, processing, storage, transportation, marketing, and final consumption. Farmers’ participation in these activities can improve their access to markets, strengthen their involvement in value creation, reduce post-harvest losses, and create opportunities for improved farm income. Agricultural extension can provide farmers with information, technical advice, and market-oriented guidance that may enhance their participation across different stages of agricultural value chains. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ participation in agricultural value chain activities. It will assess the extent to which extension services, training, advisory visits, and market information influence farmers’ involvement in different value chain activities. The study will also examine the relationship between farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension and their participation in production, processing, storage, transportation, marketing, and other agricultural value chain activities. The study will focus on extension activities such as farm visits, training programmes, demonstrations, group meetings, market information services, and advisory support. It will examine farmers’ participation in input sourcing, production planning, harvesting, sorting, grading, processing, packaging, storage, transportation, collective marketing, direct marketing, and market information exchange. Attention will also be given to farmers’ access to information on product quality requirements, market prices, buyers, value addition opportunities, and other factors relevant to agricultural value chain participation. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural extension services and participation in value chain activities. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ participation in agricultural value chain activities. The level of participation across different value chain stages will also be assessed. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension has a positive effect on farmers’ participation in agricultural value chain activities. Farmers who receive regular extension contact, technical information, and market-oriented advisory services may demonstrate greater participation in processing, grading, packaging, storage, marketing, and other value chain activities. However, limited access to market information, inadequate infrastructure, high transportation costs, limited processing facilities, insufficient finance, and weak linkages with buyers may constrain farmers’ participation in some value chain activities. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, farmer organizations, agribusiness operators, processors, produce marketers, government agricultural agencies, development organizations, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders. The findings may assist extension agencies in strengthening market-oriented advisory programmes that help farmers participate more effectively in agricultural value chains. Improved participation may contribute to better market access, reduced post-harvest losses, increased value addition, stronger market relationships, and improved income opportunities for farmers. The study concludes that agricultural extension can contribute to increased farmers’ participation in agricultural value chain activities by providing relevant technical, production, and market information. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen value chain-oriented advisory services through practical training, market information dissemination, business-oriented guidance, and stronger linkages between farmers and value chain actors. Collaboration among extension organizations, farmer groups, processors, marketers, financial institutions, government agencies, and other stakeholders should also be encouraged to improve farmers’ participation across agricultural value chains.
