Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Knowledge of Soil Moisture Conservation
Abstract
Soil moisture conservation is an important aspect of sustainable agricultural production because adequate soil moisture is essential for crop growth, nutrient uptake, and productivity. Inadequate soil moisture caused by irregular rainfall, high evaporation, runoff, and poor soil management can negatively affect crop production, particularly in areas where farmers depend largely on rainfall. Agricultural extension can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and technical guidance on appropriate soil moisture conservation practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ knowledge of soil moisture conservation. It will assess farmers’ access to agricultural extension services and determine the extent to which extension activities influence their knowledge of recommended soil moisture conservation practices. The study will also identify the major sources of soil moisture conservation information available to farmers and examine challenges affecting their access to extension support. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of practices such as mulching, minimum tillage, conservation tillage, cover cropping, crop residue retention, contour farming, ridging, terracing, water harvesting, appropriate planting methods, and maintenance of soil organic matter. It will also consider farmers’ knowledge of reducing surface runoff, controlling evaporation, improving soil water infiltration, and maintaining soil moisture for crop production. The study will further examine farmers’ exposure to extension visits, training, demonstrations, advisory materials, and other agricultural information services. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their access to agricultural extension services and knowledge of soil moisture conservation practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, knowledge-level assessment, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ knowledge of soil moisture conservation. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater access to agricultural extension services may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of soil moisture conservation practices. Extension visits, training, demonstrations, and advisory information may improve farmers’ understanding of mulching, cover cropping, residue retention, water harvesting, conservation tillage, and other practices that help retain soil moisture. However, inadequate extension coverage, limited technical information, labour requirements, financial constraints, and lack of appropriate conservation materials may remain challenges affecting farmers’ knowledge. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, farmer organisations, agricultural development agencies, environmental and natural resource management organisations, policymakers, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes on soil and water conservation and improving farmers’ understanding of appropriate moisture management practices. The findings may also support efforts to improve crop productivity, reduce the effects of moisture stress, promote sustainable land management, and strengthen farmers’ resilience to variable rainfall conditions. The study concludes that agricultural extension is important for improving farmers’ knowledge of soil moisture conservation and promoting sustainable agricultural resource management. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, practical demonstrations, field visits, and advisory services on soil moisture conservation. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt appropriate moisture conservation practices and make greater use of available extension information to improve soil water management and agricultural productivity.
