Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Knowledge of Safe Grain Drying

Abstract

Safe grain drying is an important post-harvest practice because the moisture content of harvested grains influences their quality, storage stability, susceptibility to mould growth, and potential losses. Improper drying methods can result in excessive moisture, contamination, grain deterioration, and reduced market value. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical guidance on appropriate grain drying methods, moisture management, handling, and storage preparation. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ knowledge of safe grain drying. The study will assess farmers’ level of knowledge of recommended grain drying practices and determine how agricultural extension contributes to their understanding of appropriate drying methods. It will also examine farmers’ exposure to extension education, demonstrations, farm visits, and advisory information relating to grain drying and post-harvest management. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of appropriate drying periods, moisture content assessment, drying surfaces, turning and aeration of grains, protection from rain and contamination, use of improved drying equipment, hygienic handling, and preparation of grains for storage. It will also consider farmers’ sources of information on grain drying, frequency of extension contact, participation in training programmes, and access to practical demonstrations on improved drying techniques. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their exposure to agricultural extension services and their knowledge of safe grain drying practices. The data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ knowledge of safe grain drying. The study is expected to reveal variations in farmers’ knowledge of safe grain drying practices based on their level of exposure to agricultural extension services. Farmers who receive regular extension training, demonstrations, farm visits, and advisory information may demonstrate better knowledge of appropriate drying procedures than farmers with limited extension contact. The study may also identify knowledge gaps relating to moisture control, contamination prevention, drying equipment, and proper preparation of grains for storage. The study will be useful to grain farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ associations, post-harvest management specialists, researchers, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote improved grain drying practices and reducing post-harvest losses associated with inadequate drying and poor grain handling. The study concludes that agricultural extension can contribute to improving farmers’ knowledge of safe grain drying practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education through practical demonstrations, training programmes, farm visits, and appropriate advisory materials on grain drying and moisture management. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt recommended drying practices to improve grain quality, reduce post-harvest losses, and enhance the storage value of harvested grains.
