Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Safe Animal Handling Practices

Abstract

Safe animal handling practices are important for protecting farmers, farm workers, and livestock during routine agricultural activities. Improper handling of animals can result in injuries, animal stress, reduced productivity, and losses associated with unsafe livestock management. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical guidance on appropriate animal handling techniques, restraint methods, movement procedures, and safety measures for reducing risks during livestock operations. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of safe animal handling practices. It will assess the extent to which agricultural extension services improve farmers’ knowledge and use of recommended animal handling procedures. The study will also determine the influence of extension education, advisory visits, demonstrations, and training on farmers’ adoption of safe practices when restraining, moving, feeding, treating, transporting, and carrying out routine management activities involving livestock. The study will focus on agricultural extension, farmers’ knowledge of animal handling, livestock safety, animal restraint, animal movement, livestock transportation, feeding practices, treatment procedures, protective measures, and adoption of recommended livestock management practices. It will also assess farmers’ sources of information on safe animal handling and determine the extent to which extension agents provide practical guidance on reducing injuries and improving the welfare of animals during farm operations. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from livestock farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural extension services, knowledge of safe animal handling practices, and level of adoption of recommended procedures. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of safe animal handling practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of safe animal handling practices. Farmers who receive regular extension education and practical demonstrations may demonstrate greater knowledge and use of appropriate restraint techniques, safe animal movement procedures, protective equipment, and careful handling methods. The level of adoption may also vary according to frequency of extension contact, livestock production experience, access to training, and availability of appropriate handling facilities. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, veterinary professionals, agricultural development agencies, livestock cooperatives, animal welfare organisations, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote safer livestock management and reduce injuries associated with animal handling. The findings may also assist agricultural and veterinary agencies in developing practical training programmes that improve farmers’ skills in safe and responsible animal handling. The study concludes that agricultural extension can play an important role in improving farmers’ adoption of safe animal handling practices through education, advisory support, and practical demonstrations. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen training on animal restraint, movement, transportation, treatment, and other routine handling procedures. Farmers should also be encouraged to use appropriate protective equipment and handling facilities to reduce injuries, improve animal welfare, and promote safer livestock production.
