Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Quail Production Practices

Abstract

Quail production involves the rearing and management of quails for meat, eggs, breeding, and other agricultural purposes. Appropriate quail production practices are important for maintaining healthy birds, improving growth and egg production, reducing disease occurrence, and enhancing farm profitability. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with relevant information, technical advice, and practical guidance needed to adopt improved quail production practices and manage their enterprises effectively. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of quail production practices. The study will assess farmers’ access to agricultural extension information and determine how extension support influences their adoption of recommended practices in quail production. It will also examine the role of extension agents in providing farmers with knowledge and technical guidance on the proper management of quails. The study will focus on agricultural extension contact, advisory services, extension training, farmers’ knowledge of quail production, housing management, brooding, feeding, watering, sanitation, disease prevention, biosecurity, stocking, flock management, and record keeping. It will also consider farmers’ participation in extension programmes, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and other agricultural advisory activities related to improved quail production. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected quail farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their access to agricultural extension services and adoption of quail production practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ adoption of recommended quail production practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of improved quail production practices. Farmers with greater access to extension information, advisory visits, training, and demonstrations may demonstrate higher adoption of appropriate housing, feeding, brooding, sanitation, disease prevention, biosecurity, and record-keeping practices. The study may also reveal that inadequate extension contact, limited technical knowledge, high production costs, and insufficient veterinary support can constrain farmers’ adoption of recommended quail production practices. The study will be useful to quail farmers, agricultural extension agents, poultry development agencies, veterinary personnel, agricultural development organizations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information on the contribution of agricultural extension to improved quail production and farm management. The findings may also assist relevant agencies in designing practical extension programmes that strengthen farmers’ knowledge and skills for improving quail health, productivity, and profitability. The study concludes that agricultural extension is an important component of promoting farmers’ adoption of improved quail production practices because appropriate advisory support can enhance farmers’ knowledge and practical management skills. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular farm visits, training, demonstrations, and advisory services on quail housing, feeding, brooding, sanitation, disease prevention, biosecurity, flock management, and record keeping to support efficient and sustainable quail production.
