Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Honey Quality Preservation Practices

Abstract

Honey quality preservation is an important aspect of beekeeping because appropriate preservation practices help maintain the purity, nutritional value, safety, flavour, and market quality of honey after harvesting. Poor handling, exposure to moisture, contamination, unsuitable storage conditions, and improper packaging can reduce honey quality and shorten its shelf life. Agricultural extension provides farmers with technical information and practical guidance on recommended honey harvesting, handling, processing, storage, and preservation practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of honey quality preservation practices. The study will assess the extent of farmers’ access to agricultural extension services and determine how extension influences their adoption of recommended honey quality preservation practices. It will examine farmers’ exposure to extension visits, training, demonstrations, advisory services, and educational materials relating to honey quality preservation. The study will also assess the extent to which farmers apply appropriate practices for honey harvesting, filtration, moisture control, handling, storage, packaging, and protection from contamination. The study will focus on agricultural extension, farmers, honey quality preservation, honey harvesting, honey handling, honey filtration, moisture control, storage practices, packaging, contamination prevention, honey hygiene, product quality, shelf-life management, and beekeeping practices. Information will be obtained on farmers’ knowledge and application of recommended methods for maintaining honey quality from harvesting through storage and marketing. The study will also identify challenges that may limit farmers’ adoption of appropriate preservation practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from beekeepers through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on access to extension services and adoption of honey quality preservation practices. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, mean scores, and standard deviations. Inferential techniques such as correlation and regression analysis may also be used to determine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ adoption of recommended honey quality preservation practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of honey quality preservation practices. Farmers who receive regular extension training, demonstrations, farm visits, and advisory information may demonstrate greater knowledge and better application of recommended harvesting, filtration, moisture control, storage, packaging, and contamination prevention practices. The study may also reveal that inadequate extension contact, limited access to suitable storage and packaging materials, poor processing facilities, and insufficient technical knowledge could constrain the effective preservation of honey quality. The study will be useful to beekeepers, agricultural extension agents, apiculture development organisations, agricultural agencies, policymakers, researchers, honey processors, and other stakeholders involved in honey production and marketing. It may provide useful information for improving extension programmes and strengthening farmers’ technical capacity in honey quality management. The findings may also assist relevant organisations in developing practical training programmes that promote safe handling, proper storage, and improved market quality of honey. The study concludes that agricultural extension is an important means of improving farmers’ knowledge and adoption of appropriate honey quality preservation practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and apiculture development organisations should provide regular training, demonstrations, farm visits, and advisory services on honey harvesting, filtration, moisture management, hygienic handling, storage, and packaging. Extension programmes should also promote access to appropriate preservation and storage materials to support the maintenance of honey quality and sustainable beekeeping enterprises.
