Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Farm Waste Management Practices

Abstract

Farm waste management is an important aspect of sustainable agricultural production because improper disposal of crop residues, animal waste, agrochemical containers, and other farm wastes can contribute to environmental pollution, resource loss, and health risks. Appropriate waste management practices can enable farmers to reuse valuable agricultural materials, improve soil fertility, maintain farm hygiene, and reduce environmental impacts. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with relevant knowledge, technical guidance, and practical demonstrations needed to adopt appropriate farm waste management practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of farm waste management practices. It will assess the extent to which extension contact, advisory information, farmer training, demonstrations, and technical support influence farmers’ knowledge and application of appropriate waste management practices. The study will also examine farmers’ exposure to extension services and their adoption of methods for managing different forms of agricultural waste. The study will focus on the management of crop residues, animal manure, agrochemical containers, spoiled farm products, and other farm wastes. It will assess practices such as composting, manure utilization, residue incorporation, controlled disposal, recycling, safe storage, and appropriate handling of agricultural waste. The study will also examine the sources of information available to farmers concerning environmentally responsible farm waste management. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate farm waste management assessment instruments. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to determine the relationship between agricultural extension services and farmers’ adoption of farm waste management practices. The study is expected to reveal that exposure to agricultural extension services may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of appropriate farm waste management practices. Farmers who receive regular advisory information, training, and practical demonstrations may demonstrate greater knowledge and application of composting, manure utilization, residue management, recycling, and safe waste disposal practices. The study may also identify specific waste management areas where farmers require additional technical guidance. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, environmental agencies, government agricultural institutions, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for developing extension programmes that promote sustainable waste management, improve resource utilization, reduce environmental pollution, and encourage environmentally responsible agricultural practices among farming communities. The study concludes that agricultural extension services can support farmers’ adoption of appropriate farm waste management practices by providing relevant information, technical guidance, and practical learning opportunities. It is therefore recommended that extension organisations strengthen farmer training, field demonstrations, and advisory services on composting, manure management, residue utilization, recycling, and safe disposal of agricultural waste.
