Effect of Agricultural Extension Education on Fish Farmers’ Adoption of Fingerling Acclimatization Practices

Abstract

Fingerling acclimatization is an important aquaculture management practice that enables young fish to gradually adjust to new water conditions before being introduced into production ponds or tanks. Proper acclimatization helps reduce physiological stress, mortality, poor feeding, and other problems associated with sudden changes in water temperature, quality, and environmental conditions. Agricultural extension education can provide fish farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to understand and apply appropriate fingerling acclimatization procedures. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension education on fish farmers’ adoption of fingerling acclimatization practices. The study will assess the level of agricultural extension education received by fish farmers and determine its effect on their adoption of recommended fingerling acclimatization practices. It will examine farmers’ knowledge of gradual water adjustment, temperature matching, water-quality considerations, stocking procedures, handling techniques, observation of fingerling behaviour, and appropriate acclimatization duration. The study will also identify the sources through which fish farmers obtain information about fingerling acclimatization. The study will focus on agricultural extension education, fish farmers, fingerling acclimatization, water temperature adjustment, water-quality management, fingerling handling, stocking practices, fingerling stress management, fish survival, aquaculture management, and extension advisory services. Information will be obtained on farmers’ exposure to extension training, demonstrations, farm visits, advisory contacts, and educational materials relating to fingerling management. The study will also consider farmers’ access to suitable facilities and equipment required for effective acclimatization. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from fish farmers through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on extension education exposure, knowledge, and adoption of fingerling acclimatization practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, mean scores, and standard deviations. Inferential techniques such as correlation and regression analysis may also be used to determine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of recommended acclimatization practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension education may have a positive effect on fish farmers’ adoption of fingerling acclimatization practices. Farmers who receive regular and practical extension education may demonstrate greater knowledge and better application of gradual water adjustment, careful fingerling handling, temperature management, and appropriate stocking procedures. The study may also reveal that inadequate extension contact, limited technical knowledge, poor access to appropriate facilities, and lack of quality water-management equipment may constrain the adoption of recommended practices. The study will be useful to fish farmers, agricultural extension agents, fisheries development agencies, aquaculture organisations, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders involved in fish production. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension education programmes on fingerling management and improving farmers’ technical capacity in aquaculture production. The findings may also assist extension agencies in developing practical training programmes that address common challenges associated with fingerling acclimatization and early-stage fish management. The study concludes that agricultural extension education is an important means of improving fish farmers’ knowledge and adoption of appropriate fingerling acclimatization practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and fisheries development organisations should provide regular practical training, demonstrations, and advisory services on fingerling acclimatization. Extension programmes should emphasise water-quality management, gradual environmental adjustment, proper fingerling handling, and safe stocking procedures to promote better fingerling survival and sustainable aquaculture production.
