Effect of Agricultural Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Snail Breeding Record Systems

Abstract

Snail breeding record systems involve the systematic collection and maintenance of information relating to breeding activities, reproductive performance, growth, feeding, health, mortality, and other important aspects of snail production. Proper record keeping can help farmers monitor breeding performance, identify productive breeding stock, track farm activities, and support informed management decisions. Agricultural extension education can provide farmers with the knowledge and skills required to establish and use appropriate record systems in snail breeding enterprises. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension education on farmers’ adoption of snail breeding record systems. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education on snail breeding records and determine how such education influences their adoption of systematic record-keeping practices. It will also examine the extent to which farmers apply the knowledge gained through extension education in recording and managing breeding information. The study will focus on agricultural extension education, farmers’ knowledge of snail breeding records, breeding stock identification, mating records, egg-laying records, hatchling records, growth records, feeding records, mortality records, health records, and breeding performance monitoring. It will also consider farmers’ participation in extension training, demonstrations, farm visits, and advisory activities relating to record keeping and management of snail breeding enterprises. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected snail farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural extension education and adoption of snail breeding record systems. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of breeding record systems. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension education may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of snail breeding record systems. Farmers who receive regular and practical extension education may demonstrate greater adoption of breeding, growth, feeding, health, mortality, and reproductive performance records. The study may also reveal that inadequate extension education, limited record-keeping skills, lack of appropriate recording materials, and low awareness of the management benefits of farm records can constrain farmers’ adoption of systematic snail breeding record systems. The study will be useful to snail farmers, agricultural extension agents, livestock development agencies, agricultural development organizations, policymakers, agribusiness practitioners, and researchers. It may provide useful information on the role of extension education in improving record keeping and management of snail breeding enterprises. The findings may also assist extension organizations in developing practical educational programmes that strengthen farmers’ capacity to maintain accurate breeding records and use recorded information for better production decisions. The study concludes that agricultural extension education is an important component of promoting farmers’ adoption of snail breeding record systems because appropriate education can improve farmers’ knowledge and practical record-keeping skills. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular training, demonstrations, and advisory services on breeding records, stock identification, reproductive monitoring, growth records, health records, and other relevant farm documentation practices to improve management efficiency and support sustainable snail production.
