Effect of Agricultural Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Sesame Seed Treatment Practices

Abstract

Sesame seed treatment is an important pre-planting practice that can improve seed quality, support better germination, and reduce the risk of seed-borne pests and diseases. Appropriate treatment of sesame seeds can contribute to healthy crop establishment and improved field performance. However, inadequate knowledge of suitable treatment methods may limit farmers’ adoption of recommended practices. Agricultural extension education can provide farmers with relevant information and practical skills needed to understand and apply appropriate sesame seed treatment techniques. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension education on farmers’ adoption of sesame seed treatment practices. It will assess the extent to which extension education influences farmers’ knowledge and use of recommended seed treatment methods before planting. The study will also examine the contribution of extension training, demonstrations, advisory visits, and information dissemination to farmers’ adoption of appropriate sesame seed treatment practices. The study will focus on agricultural extension education, sesame production, seed treatment practices, farmers’ knowledge, seed quality, seed selection, seed dressing, seed-borne diseases, pest prevention, treatment materials, treatment procedures, seed handling, germination, crop establishment, and adoption of sesame seed treatment practices. It will also assess farmers’ sources of information on seed treatment and identify challenges that may affect their access to treatment materials and technical information. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from sesame farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural extension education, knowledge of sesame seed treatment practices, and level of adoption of recommended treatment methods. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of agricultural extension education on farmers’ adoption of sesame seed treatment practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension education may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of sesame seed treatment practices. Farmers who receive regular extension training, practical demonstrations, and technical guidance may demonstrate greater knowledge and use of appropriate seed treatment methods. The level of adoption may also vary according to farmers’ access to extension services, availability and cost of treatment materials, farming experience, access to quality seeds, and perceived benefits of seed treatment. The study will be useful to sesame farmers, agricultural extension agents, seed suppliers, agricultural cooperatives, government agricultural agencies, research institutions, development organisations, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes on seed quality management and improved sesame production. The findings may also assist stakeholders in developing practical training and demonstration programmes that improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of suitable sesame seed treatment practices. The study concludes that agricultural extension education can contribute to improved adoption of sesame seed treatment practices by increasing farmers’ knowledge, awareness, and practical skills in pre-planting seed management. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, demonstrations, and advisory services on appropriate sesame seed treatment methods, safe handling procedures, and the use of suitable treatment materials. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt recommended seed treatment practices to improve germination, reduce seed-related production problems, and support successful sesame crop establishment.
