Effect of Agricultural Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Mushroom Spawn Production

Abstract

Mushroom production is an emerging agricultural enterprise that provides opportunities for income generation, food production, employment creation, and diversification of farming activities. Mushroom spawn serves as the planting material used in mushroom cultivation and is essential for successful production. However, farmers may face challenges in acquiring quality spawn and developing the technical knowledge required for its production. Agricultural extension education can provide farmers with relevant information, practical skills, and technical guidance on mushroom spawn production. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension education on farmers’ adoption of mushroom spawn production. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education, their knowledge of mushroom spawn production techniques, and the extent to which extension education influences their adoption of recommended spawn production practices. It will also examine the factors associated with farmers’ participation in extension education programmes relating to mushroom production. The study will focus on agricultural extension education, mushroom spawn production, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, training participation, practical demonstrations, spawn preparation, substrate preparation, sterilization, inoculation, incubation, hygiene practices, and adoption of recommended mushroom production techniques. Information will be obtained from farmers involved or interested in mushroom production to assess their knowledge and application of spawn production practices following exposure to extension education. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field assessment methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between agricultural extension education and farmers’ adoption of mushroom spawn production practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension education may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of mushroom spawn production practices. Farmers who receive regular extension training, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory services may demonstrate greater awareness and application of appropriate spawn production procedures. The study may also show that access to practical training, quality production materials, extension contact, and follow-up support influence farmers’ ability to adopt mushroom spawn production successfully. The study will be useful to mushroom farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, research institutions, cooperative organizations, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide information for improving extension programmes designed to support mushroom production and related agricultural enterprises. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that address farmers’ technical needs in mushroom spawn production. The study concludes that agricultural extension education is an important source of knowledge and technical support for improving farmers’ adoption of mushroom spawn production practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical training, demonstration activities, technical advisory services, and follow-up visits for farmers interested in mushroom production. Extension programmes should also promote access to appropriate materials and locally relevant information to support effective adoption of mushroom spawn production practices.
