Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Knowledge of Seed Health Management

Abstract

Seed health management involves the application of appropriate practices to protect seeds from pathogens, pests, contamination, and other factors that can reduce their viability, germination, and ability to produce healthy crops. Healthy seeds are essential for successful crop establishment and can contribute to uniform plant growth, improved productivity, and reduced crop losses. Practices such as the use of healthy planting materials, seed inspection, seed treatment, proper drying, appropriate storage, pest and disease prevention, and hygienic seed handling are important components of effective seed health management. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with the technical information and practical guidance required to improve their knowledge of these practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ knowledge of seed health management. The study will assess farmers’ existing knowledge of seed health practices and determine the extent to which exposure to agricultural advisory services contributes to their understanding of recommended seed health management techniques. It will also examine farmers’ access to advisory services, frequency of contact with extension personnel, and the major sources of information through which farmers obtain seed health information. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of selecting healthy seeds, identifying damaged or infected seeds, seed inspection, seed treatment, seed drying, moisture management, hygienic seed handling, storage conditions, pest and pathogen prevention, contamination control, and appropriate seed preservation practices. Attention will also be given to farmers’ knowledge of recognizing common signs of poor seed health and the advisory methods used to communicate seed health information, including farm visits, demonstrations, training programmes, farmer meetings, field days, and agricultural advisory activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of seed health management practices and their exposure to agricultural advisory services. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between agricultural advisory services and farmers’ knowledge of seed health management. The study is expected to reveal differences in farmers’ knowledge of seed health management according to their level of exposure to agricultural advisory services. Farmers who receive regular technical information, practical demonstrations, training, and farm visits may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of recommended seed health practices. The study may also identify knowledge gaps relating to seed inspection, treatment, drying, storage, pest and pathogen control, and contamination prevention. Constraints such as inadequate advisory contact, limited access to technical information, high cost of seed treatment materials, and inadequate storage facilities may also be identified. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, seed producers, seed companies, agricultural development agencies, farmer associations, government institutions, researchers, and policymakers. The findings may assist in developing targeted advisory programmes that address farmers’ knowledge gaps and improve seed health management. Improved knowledge may contribute to better seed quality, higher germination rates, healthier crop establishment, reduced transmission of seed-borne problems, lower production losses, and improved agricultural productivity. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services are important for improving farmers’ knowledge of seed health management by providing relevant technical information and practical guidance. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen seed health education through practical demonstrations, training programmes, farm visits, field days, and regular advisory services. Farmers should also be supported with timely information, appropriate seed treatment materials, quality storage facilities, and reliable technical guidance to improve their knowledge and management of seed health.
