Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Knowledge of Legume Processing Methods

Abstract

Legumes such as cowpea, soybean, groundnut, and beans are important agricultural commodities that contribute to food security, household nutrition, livestock feeding, and farm income. Appropriate processing methods can improve the quality, safety, storage life, and market value of legume products while reducing post-harvest losses. Farmers’ knowledge of suitable processing techniques is therefore important for ensuring effective utilisation and value addition of legume produce. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with relevant information, practical demonstrations, and technical guidance on improved legume processing methods. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ knowledge of legume processing methods. It will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural advisory services and determine how such services influence their understanding of appropriate methods for processing different types of legumes. The study will also examine farmers’ existing knowledge of traditional and improved processing techniques and identify the sources through which they obtain information about legume processing. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of cleaning, sorting, drying, shelling, threshing, dehulling, milling, roasting, soaking, fermentation, grinding, packaging, and storage of legume products. It will also consider knowledge of appropriate hygiene practices, moisture control, pest prevention, processing equipment, product preservation, and quality maintenance. The study will further examine farmers’ access to agricultural advisory services, frequency of advisory contact, participation in demonstrations, access to processing information, availability of processing equipment, and involvement in farmer organisations. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural advisory services and their knowledge of legume processing methods. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to examine the relationship between agricultural advisory services and farmers’ knowledge of legume processing methods. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to agricultural advisory services may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of improved legume processing methods. Advisory services may improve farmers’ understanding of appropriate processing techniques, hygiene practices, drying methods, storage requirements, quality control, and the use of improved processing equipment. However, challenges such as inadequate processing facilities, limited access to improved equipment, high processing costs, insufficient technical information, and limited advisory contact may contribute to gaps in farmers’ knowledge. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, food processors, farmer organisations, agricultural development agencies, government institutions, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information on the role of agricultural advisory services in improving farmers’ knowledge of legume processing and value addition. Extension organisations may use the findings to strengthen practical training and demonstrations, while agricultural development agencies may use the information to support access to appropriate processing technologies and technical resources. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services can contribute to improving farmers’ knowledge of legume processing methods by providing relevant information, practical demonstrations, and technical guidance. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen advisory programmes on improved legume processing, hygiene, quality control, preservation, packaging, and storage. Relevant stakeholders should also facilitate farmers’ access to affordable processing equipment, practical training, and appropriate technical information to improve the quality, safety, value, and utilisation of processed legume products.
