Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Knowledge of Grafting Techniques
Abstract
Grafting is an important horticultural propagation technique that involves joining parts of two plants to form a single growing plant. The technique is widely used in the production and improvement of fruit trees because it can help farmers maintain desirable plant characteristics, improve plant establishment, shorten the period to fruit production, and produce planting materials with preferred qualities. However, successful grafting requires adequate technical knowledge of selecting suitable scion and rootstock materials, making appropriate cuts, joining plant parts correctly, and providing proper aftercare. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with the information and practical guidance required to improve their knowledge and application of grafting techniques. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ knowledge of grafting techniques. The study will assess farmers’ existing knowledge of grafting practices and determine the extent to which exposure to agricultural advisory services contributes to their understanding of recommended grafting procedures. It will also examine farmers’ access to advisory services, frequency of contact with extension personnel, and the major sources of information through which farmers obtain knowledge about grafting. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of scion and rootstock selection, compatibility, preparation of plant materials, timing of grafting, grafting tools, grafting methods, proper cutting techniques, joining and tying of grafted materials, graft protection, aftercare, and identification of successful graft unions. Attention will also be given to advisory methods such as farm visits, practical demonstrations, training programmes, farmer meetings, field days, and other horticultural extension activities used to communicate grafting knowledge to farmers. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected fruit and horticultural farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of grafting techniques and their exposure to agricultural advisory services. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between agricultural advisory services and farmers’ knowledge of grafting techniques. The study is expected to reveal differences in farmers’ knowledge of grafting techniques according to their level of exposure to agricultural advisory services. Farmers who receive regular practical demonstrations, training, farm visits, and technical guidance may demonstrate better knowledge of grafting procedures than farmers with limited advisory contact. The study may also identify knowledge gaps relating to scion selection, rootstock compatibility, grafting methods, timing, tool use, and graft aftercare, as well as constraints such as limited extension contact, lack of appropriate grafting tools, inadequate training, and limited access to quality planting materials. The study will be useful to fruit farmers, agricultural extension agents, horticultural organisations, nursery operators, farmer associations, agricultural development agencies, researchers, and policymakers. The findings may assist in developing practical advisory programmes that improve farmers’ knowledge and skills in vegetative propagation. Improved knowledge of grafting techniques may contribute to better production of quality planting materials, successful establishment of fruit trees, improved orchard development, preservation of desirable plant characteristics, and increased horticultural productivity. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services are important for improving farmers’ knowledge of grafting techniques by providing relevant technical information and practical guidance. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen grafting education through hands-on demonstrations, farmer training, farm visits, field days, and practical horticultural advisory services. Farmers should also be supported with access to suitable grafting tools, quality scion and rootstock materials, and timely technical information to improve their ability to apply recommended grafting techniques effectively.
