Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Knowledge of Food Traceability Practices

Abstract

Food traceability practices involve the identification, documentation, and tracking of food products and their movement from the farm through handling, storage, processing, transportation, and marketing. Effective traceability can improve food safety, quality assurance, transparency, accountability, and consumer confidence by enabling information about the origin and handling history of agricultural products to be identified when required. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with relevant information and technical guidance needed to understand and apply appropriate food traceability practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ knowledge of food traceability practices. It will assess the extent to which advisory information, training, demonstrations, farm visits, and technical guidance improve farmers’ understanding of traceability requirements. The study will also determine farmers’ knowledge of the importance of traceability and the procedures required to document and track agricultural food products. The study will focus on advisory activities such as farmer training, practical demonstrations, farm visits, group discussions, market-oriented advisory services, and distribution of technical information. It will examine farmers’ knowledge of product identification, farm records, input documentation, production dates, harvesting records, batch identification, storage information, transportation records, labeling, and documentation of product movement. Attention will also be given to farmers’ understanding of traceability in relation to food safety, quality control, certification, market access, and agricultural supply-chain management. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to agricultural advisory services and their knowledge of food traceability practices. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between agricultural advisory services and farmers’ knowledge of food traceability practices. Knowledge levels across different traceability requirements will also be assessed. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural advisory services have a positive effect on farmers’ knowledge of food traceability practices. Farmers who receive regular advisory contact, practical demonstrations, and relevant technical information may demonstrate better knowledge of record keeping, product identification, labeling, documentation, and tracking procedures. However, limited advisory contact, inadequate record-keeping skills, lack of appropriate technology, low digital literacy, limited access to technical information, and perceived costs of traceability practices may constrain farmers’ knowledge and application of food traceability procedures. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural advisory agents, food processors, produce marketers, farmer organizations, certification bodies, regulatory agencies, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders in the agricultural and food sectors. The findings may assist advisory service providers in developing practical programmes that improve farmers’ knowledge of traceability requirements and strengthen their participation in organized food supply chains. Improved knowledge may contribute to better documentation, food safety, quality assurance, certification, market access, and accountability within the agricultural sector. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services can contribute to improved farmers’ knowledge of food traceability practices by providing relevant information, technical guidance, and practical training. It is therefore recommended that agricultural advisory agencies strengthen farmer education through practical demonstrations, simplified record-keeping materials, farm visits, and digital information tools that promote understanding of traceability procedures. Collaboration among advisory agencies, food safety authorities, certification organizations, farmer groups, processors, and market stakeholders should also be encouraged to improve farmers’ access to traceability information and technical support.
