Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Knowledge of Farm Task Allocation

Abstract

Farm task allocation is an important aspect of farm management because it involves assigning agricultural activities to family members, hired labourers, and other farm workers according to their skills, availability, and responsibilities. Proper allocation of farm tasks can improve labour utilisation, reduce delays in farm operations, and contribute to efficient use of available farm resources. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with information and guidance on effective labour organisation and task allocation practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ knowledge of farm task allocation. It will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural advisory services and determine their level of knowledge regarding the effective distribution of farm tasks. The study will also examine the relationship between access to advisory services and farmers’ knowledge of appropriate task allocation practices. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of identifying farm activities, assigning tasks according to workers’ skills and experience, allocating family and hired labour, scheduling farm activities, coordinating multiple farm operations, and monitoring the completion of assigned tasks. It will also consider farmers’ exposure to extension visits, advisory meetings, demonstrations, training programmes, farm visits, and agricultural information relating to labour management and farm operations. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their exposure to agricultural advisory services and knowledge of farm task allocation practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, knowledge scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between agricultural advisory services and farmers’ knowledge of farm task allocation. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who have greater access to agricultural advisory services may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of effective farm task allocation. Regular advisory contact, practical demonstrations, and training may improve farmers’ understanding of how to distribute tasks efficiently. However, inadequate extension contact, limited advisory coverage, labour shortages, seasonal demands, and insufficient information may constrain farmers’ ability to apply appropriate task allocation practices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, farm managers, cooperative organisations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information on the role of agricultural advisory services in improving farmers’ knowledge of labour organisation and farm management. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical advisory programmes that address farmers’ labour allocation and farm task management needs. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services are important for improving farmers’ knowledge of effective farm task allocation and strengthening farm management practices. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies provide regular and practical advisory services on labour planning, task assignment, work scheduling, and farm supervision. Extension agents should also use demonstrations and farm-based training to help farmers apply appropriate task allocation methods for efficient farm operations.
