Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Knowledge of Cover Cropping

Abstract

Cover cropping involves the cultivation of specific crops primarily to protect and improve agricultural soils between or alongside periods of main crop production. Cover crops can help reduce soil erosion, conserve soil moisture, suppress weeds, improve soil organic matter, enhance nutrient cycling, and protect soil structure. Effective use of cover crops requires farmers to understand appropriate crop selection, planting methods, timing, management, termination, and integration with other farm practices. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with relevant technical information and practical guidance needed to improve their knowledge and application of cover cropping practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ knowledge of cover cropping. The study will assess farmers’ existing knowledge of cover cropping practices and determine the extent to which exposure to agricultural advisory services contributes to their understanding of recommended techniques. It will also examine farmers’ access to advisory services, frequency of contact with extension personnel, and the major sources of information through which farmers obtain knowledge about cover crops. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of the purpose and benefits of cover crops, selection of suitable cover crop species, seed preparation, planting methods, planting time, spacing, moisture management, weed suppression, nutrient management, pest and disease management, crop residue management, termination methods, and integration of cover crops into existing farming systems. Attention will also be given to advisory methods such as farm visits, practical demonstrations, training programmes, farmer meetings, field days, farmer field schools, and other agricultural advisory activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of cover cropping practices and their exposure to agricultural advisory services. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between agricultural advisory services and farmers’ knowledge of cover cropping. The study is expected to reveal differences in farmers’ knowledge of cover cropping according to their level of exposure to agricultural advisory services. Farmers who receive regular technical information, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and training may demonstrate better knowledge of the selection, establishment, management, and termination of cover crops. The study may also identify knowledge gaps relating to suitable cover crop species, planting periods, moisture management, termination, and integration with main crops. Constraints such as limited advisory contact, inadequate technical information, shortage of suitable seeds, labour requirements, and competing demands for farmland may also be identified. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, conservation agriculture organisations, agricultural development agencies, farmer associations, government institutions, researchers, and policymakers. The findings may assist in developing advisory programmes that improve farmers’ understanding of cover cropping and promote sustainable soil management. Improved knowledge may contribute to better soil protection, reduced erosion, improved moisture conservation, enhanced soil fertility, increased organic matter, improved weed management, and more sustainable agricultural production. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services are important for improving farmers’ knowledge of cover cropping by providing relevant information, practical guidance, and technical support. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen cover cropping education through practical demonstrations, farm visits, field days, farmer field schools, and regular advisory services. Farmers should also be supported with suitable cover crop seeds, locally relevant technical information, and practical training on crop establishment, management, and termination to improve their knowledge and effective use of cover cropping practices.
