Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Irrigation Management Practices

Abstract

Irrigation management is an important component of agricultural production, particularly in areas where rainfall is inadequate, irregular, or seasonal. Appropriate irrigation management can help farmers provide crops with adequate water, reduce water losses, maintain suitable soil moisture, and improve the efficient use of available water resources. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with technical information, practical guidance, and recommendations that support effective irrigation management. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ irrigation management practices. It will assess how access to advisory information, extension visits, farmer training, field demonstrations, and technical guidance influences farmers’ management of irrigation activities. The study will also examine the extent to which farmers apply recommended irrigation practices after receiving agricultural advisory services. The study will focus on irrigation scheduling, water application methods, irrigation frequency, water conservation, soil moisture management, drainage, maintenance of irrigation facilities, and measures for reducing water losses. It will also assess farmers’ access to advisory information on efficient irrigation technologies, water requirements, appropriate watering intervals, and the management of irrigation systems. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers involved in irrigated agriculture using structured questionnaires and appropriate farm practice assessment instruments. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to determine the relationship between agricultural advisory services and farmers’ irrigation management practices. The study is expected to reveal that access to regular and relevant agricultural advisory services may improve farmers’ irrigation management practices. Farmers who receive technical guidance, practical demonstrations, and timely information may demonstrate better irrigation scheduling, more efficient water application, improved soil moisture management, and greater attention to water conservation. The study may also identify areas where farmers require additional advisory support to improve irrigation efficiency. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, irrigation authorities, government agricultural agencies, water-resource management institutions, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening irrigation advisory programmes, improving farmer training, promoting efficient water-use practices, and supporting sustainable irrigated agricultural production. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services can contribute to improved irrigation management by providing farmers with relevant knowledge, technical guidance, and practical support. It is therefore recommended that extension organisations and agricultural agencies strengthen regular farm visits, irrigation demonstrations, farmer training, and timely advisory services on water application, irrigation scheduling, conservation, and maintenance of irrigation facilities.
