Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Store Cleaning Practices

Abstract

The study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ adoption of store cleaning practices. Proper cleaning of agricultural storage facilities is important for maintaining hygienic storage conditions, protecting stored produce from contamination, reducing pest infestation, and minimizing post-harvest losses. Regular store cleaning can also improve the suitability of storage facilities for maintaining the quality and safety of agricultural produce. The study will focus on the extent to which farmers adopt appropriate store cleaning practices following agricultural advisory services. Specific areas will include removal of leftover produce, sweeping of floors, cleaning of walls and storage surfaces, removal of dust and debris, cleaning of storage equipment, proper disposal of waste materials, inspection of storage areas after cleaning, and regular cleaning before and after storage periods. Agricultural advisory services are expected to provide farmers with relevant information and practical guidance on maintaining clean and suitable storage environments. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ access to agricultural advisory services, knowledge of store cleaning, and adoption of relevant cleaning practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural advisory services contribute to farmers’ adoption of appropriate store cleaning practices. The findings may indicate improvements in the regular removal of waste and residues, cleaning of floors and surfaces, maintenance of storage equipment, proper disposal of debris, and inspection of storage facilities. The study may also identify challenges that limit farmers’ consistent application of recommended store cleaning practices. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, storage facility operators, and policymakers by providing information on the role of agricultural advisory services in improving storage hygiene. The findings may assist extension personnel in developing practical advisory programmes that strengthen farmers’ knowledge and skills in maintaining clean storage facilities and protecting agricultural produce from avoidable losses. The study will conclude that effective agricultural advisory services can enhance farmers’ knowledge and adoption of store cleaning practices. It will recommend that agricultural extension personnel provide practical demonstrations, regular advisory visits, and follow-up support on proper cleaning schedules, removal of residues, waste disposal, equipment cleaning, and inspection of storage facilities to promote hygienic produce storage.
