Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Riparian Buffer Practices

Abstract

The study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ adoption of riparian buffer practices. Riparian buffers are important for protecting water bodies and surrounding agricultural environments by reducing soil erosion, trapping sediment, filtering agricultural runoff, and supporting vegetation along streams, rivers, and other waterways. Adoption of appropriate riparian buffer practices can therefore contribute to improved water quality, soil conservation, and sustainable agricultural land management. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of riparian buffer practices, including maintaining vegetative strips along waterways, planting suitable grasses and trees, preventing cultivation close to water bodies, controlling erosion along stream banks, maintaining buffer vegetation, and reducing the movement of soil and agricultural inputs into nearby water sources. It will also examine the role of agricultural advisory services in providing farmers with information, technical guidance, demonstrations, and farm-level support on appropriate riparian buffer management. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to agricultural advisory services and their adoption of riparian buffer practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ exposure to agricultural advisory services and the extent to which they adopt recommended riparian buffer practices. It is also expected to identify areas where farmers demonstrate adequate or inadequate adoption, particularly in relation to maintaining buffer vegetation, controlling stream-bank erosion, protecting waterways, and reducing agricultural runoff. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, environmental management institutions, water resource management authorities, farmers’ organizations, and policymakers by providing information on the contribution of advisory services to improved riparian buffer management. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes and field demonstrations that promote effective protection of waterways within agricultural landscapes. The study will conclude that agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and technical guidance needed to improve the adoption of riparian buffer practices. It will recommend regular advisory visits, practical demonstrations, farm-level training, and technical guidance on buffer establishment, vegetation management, erosion control, and waterway protection to encourage sustainable management of riparian areas.
