Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Farm-Based Biogas Technologies
Abstract
Farm-based biogas technologies provide farmers with opportunities to convert organic materials such as animal manure, crop residues, and other agricultural wastes into useful energy through anaerobic digestion. Biogas can be used for cooking, heating, electricity generation, and other farm-related activities, while the remaining digestate may serve as a nutrient-rich soil amendment. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with information, technical guidance, and practical knowledge needed to understand the benefits, operation, and management of farm-based biogas technologies. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ adoption of farm-based biogas technologies. It will assess the extent to which advisory services provide farmers with information and technical support concerning biogas production and determine how such services influence farmers’ willingness and ability to adopt biogas technologies. The study will also examine the relationship between access to agricultural advisory services and farmers’ adoption of farm-based biogas systems. The study will focus on advisory training, technical demonstrations, farm visits, information dissemination, and guidance on the construction, installation, operation, maintenance, and management of biogas systems. It will examine farmers’ adoption of technologies such as household-scale digesters, livestock manure-based digesters, farm waste digesters, and other appropriate biogas systems. Information provided by advisory agents on feedstock preparation, waste management, energy generation, digestate use, system maintenance, safety, and potential economic and environmental benefits will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their access to agricultural advisory services and adoption of farm-based biogas technologies. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Correlation and regression analysis will also be used to examine the relationship between agricultural advisory services and farmers’ adoption of farm-based biogas technologies. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural advisory services may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of farm-based biogas technologies. Farmers who receive relevant information, demonstrations, and technical guidance may have greater awareness of the benefits and practical requirements of biogas systems and may be more willing to adopt them. However, high installation costs, inadequate technical support, limited availability of equipment, insufficient knowledge, difficulties obtaining suitable feedstock, and limited access to financing may constrain adoption among some farmers. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural advisory agents, renewable energy organisations, government agricultural agencies, environmental agencies, non-governmental organisations, technology providers, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening advisory programmes that promote renewable energy technologies within agricultural communities. The study may also assist agricultural and energy stakeholders in developing practical training on biogas installation, operation, maintenance, waste management, safety, and effective utilisation of biogas and digestate. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services can contribute to farmers’ adoption of farm-based biogas technologies by providing relevant technical information, demonstrations, and practical guidance. It is therefore recommended that advisory agencies should strengthen farmer education on biogas technologies and provide practical demonstrations of suitable systems. Collaboration among agricultural extension agencies, renewable energy providers, financial institutions, research organisations, and government agencies should also be encouraged to improve farmers’ access to technical support, financing, equipment, and reliable information on farm-based biogas technologies.
